RumBarroco is a Boston-based multicultural fusion ensemble that features early Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American musics and connects them with contemporary popular and folk music of the Americas. In their performances they combine Early Music sounds of period instruments and vocals from the past including Renaissance and Baroque compositions and Latin America’s incredible synthesis of African, Arabic, and European traditions.
Included are dances such as joropo from Venezuela and Colombia, and the plena from Puerto Rico. Performers will switch from the European viola da gamba and Renaissance guitar to the Venezuelan cuatro, in order to illustrate the similar yet distinctively different sonorities and rhythmic and harmonic connections between the two continents.
This vibrant Latin-Baroque nine-member ensemble seeks to unite today’s diverse multicultural communities through the transformative passion of music.
