Determined to hide his true identity, protagonist Leonard Loftus plays his womanly alter-ego, the carefree Lulabelle Latiffa, to the hilt. But things get complicated when he falls in love with the head of the publishing company, Harriet Copeland. Throw in Loftus' wayward daughter and his irascible, elderly father and the result is a tangled web of cross-dressing cross-purposes.
