Celebrating 40 years of developing new artists, Teatro Dallas is expanding on their biennial international festivals with the addition of Nuevo Mundo, a festival to incubate new directors and playwrights. Three young directors that are under-represented on Dallas’ stages will be paired with seasoned directors to mentor and support their selections of plays they believe deserve to be seen.

  • February 14-15 - Como Agua Para Chocolate, written by Laura Esquivel and directed by Gabriel under the mentorship of Christie Vela. In 1910, during the Mexican Revolution, Pedro Muzquiz and Tita de la Garza fall in love, but their love is forbidden. When Pedro and his father ask Tita’s mother for her hand in marriage, she refuses, citing family tradition that the youngest daughter must care for her mother in old age. In order to stay near Tita, Pedro reluctantly agrees to marry Tita’s older sister, Rosaura. (performed in Spanish)
  • February 21-22 - Bright Half Life, written by Tanya Barfield and directed by Lauren Secrest under the mentorship of Sasha Maya Ada. A moving love story that spans decades in an instant - from marriage, children, skydiving, and the infinite moments that make life together. Through a kaleidoscopic blend of memories, the play captures the evolving relationship between Vicky and Erica, two complex individuals whose lives intertwine in fragmented yet vivid scenes. Through both fleeting and profound moments, the story explores how love, endurance, and hope sustain - and sometimes decay - their relationship as they navigate the challenges and joys of a life together. (performed in English)
  • February 28-March 1 - A semi-devised premiere piece called In the Beginning, created by Gerald Taylor II under the mentorship of Lauren Leblanc. In a world where everything feels like it is ending, sometimes the answer lies at the start. “In the beginning” is an exploration of several creation myths from around the world. Told by four storytellers, this romp through time and cultures is an adventure for the entire family. (Performed in English)
