Far beneath the majesty and splendor of the Paris Opera House, a masked man leads a shadowy existence. He loves the beautiful Christine, a young chorus singer, and privately tutors her while terrorizing the rest of the opera cast. His actions lead to Christine becoming the star of the opera, but as her success grows she falls in love with the handsome Raoul, a friend from her childhood. Terrified at the thought of losing her, the Phantom enacts a plan to keep Christine at his side forever, while Raoul tries to foil his scheme.
The Phantom of the Opera first opened in London in 1986, starring Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman, and opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre in 1988. It is still at the Majestic, and has since become Broadway’s longest running musical.
