Yanis Varoufakis first gained notoriety in 2015 when he encouraged Greece to default on its mounting national debt rather than accept a flawed bailout loan and austerity measures. His predictions that the bailout package would trigger a devastating spike in Greece’s poverty level while doing little to improve its economic recovery were spot on.

Now the popular and polarizing economist is sparking debate again with two provocative books. Adults in the Room chronicles the tense, behind-closed-doors negotiations that pitted Varoufakis against Europe’s political, financial and media elite. In Talking to My Daughter About the Economy, he strives to answer a question posed to him by his daughter, Xenia: Why is there so much inequality?

Both shine a light on the negative toll global capitalism is extracting on democracy around the world, and lays the groundwork for his new passion project, DiEM25, a grassroots political movement determined to defeat establishment candidates in the 2019 European Parliament elections and serve as a pan-European front against “the oligarchy-without-borders movement.”

In addition to his tenure as Greece’s minister of finance, Varoufakis has taught economics at the University of Essex, the University of East Anglia, the University of Cambridge, the University of Sydney, University of Athens, and University of Texas at Austin. His keen insights are a cautionary tale about the destructive imbalance between capitalism and democracy.

The program will be moderated by Pia M. Orrenius, Vice President and Senior Economist of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
