Zhulong Gallery will present Viscous Valley, Works by Jeremy Couillard, a solo exhibition. Couillard will transform the gallery into an otherworldly terrain with his newest series of work. Alternate realities are presented as acidic landscapes, subterranean dwellings and intimate domestic scenes within video works and prints scaling four by eight feet, overwhelming and drawing in the viewer.

Additionally, Four Proposals for a Pavilion at the Historical Society at Atmos Village, a 40-foot table sculpture created for the Brooklyn Art Museum’s Artist Ball in reference to Judy Chicago’s canonical work Dinner Table, will fill the gallery.  In tandem with the exhibition, Zhulong Gallery will host “Four Proposals Dinner Series,” allowing guests to take a seat within the valley and dine amongst this multi-media sculpture.

With a “video game aesthetic,” Couillard’s work utilizes a high-pitched color palette that turns familiar landscapes into a virtual unknown, akin to online avatar environments. Universal symbols, such as triangles, fountains, and the mythology surrounding them, fascinate the artist and are a recurring motif within his practice. Reminiscent of Albert Bierstadt paintings, the landscapes contain a fictional glory associated with the vision of mountain peaks that immerse the viewer while placing them within the lower valley. In much the same way, Couillard’s surreal and hyper-saturated valleys indulge our child-like fascination with far away places, providing evidence of worlds previously unimaginable.

Following the opening reception, the exhibit will be on display through August 16.
