Dallas hires Martine Elyse Philippe as new director of arts and culture
The city of Dallas has a new Arts boss: Martine Elyse Philippe, who has worked in arts administration and the nonprofit world, has been appointed Director of the Office of Arts & Culture, a division of the City Manager's Office that fosters partnerships and support with arts and cultural organizations.
According to a release from Dallas city manager T.C. Broadnax, Philippe will begin on December 5. She replaces Benjamin Espino, who has served as interim director since the departure of previous director Jennifer Scripps, who left to work with Downtown Dallas.
Philippe has more than 15 years of experience in arts administration, most recently as National Community Art Manager for A Window Between Worlds (AWBW) based in Los Angeles.
Previously, she served as Chair for District 12 Arts Task Force for the Atlanta City Council.
In her role with AWBW, she is the national creative strategist for the development of art- based leadership and resources to transform trauma and create community-based methods of change and social justice through art.
A trained dancer, she began her arts administration career with the City of Atlanta whereby she developed dance curriculum and went on to serve as Cultural Affairs Project Coordinator for the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. She was also Executive Director of Atlanta’s Resource for Entertainment & Arts.
She has a Bachelor of Arts in African American Studies from the University of Georgia and Master of Arts in Education Leadership from Argosy University.
"Martine is devoted to diversity, equity, and inclusion in every facet of art and culture and the proud child of immigrants from Haiti and Cuba. She has a desire to utilize the breadth of her experiences to make a tremendous impact in the City of Dallas," the release says.
