Butterball the shepherd mix is ready to bounce to his new home

From last week, Libbi the petite pit bull is still waiting for her forever home. But former SPCA Pet of the Week Kitty Girl has been adopted.

This week, meet Butterball, a 2-year-old Shepherd mix as adorable as his name. This sweet boy weighs in at 45 pounds, which makes him a good fit for any active family.

Butterball has a velvety caramel coat, warm chocolate eyes and a sweet pink tongue ready to shower you with kisses. He gets along with other dogs, but this guy would prefer a home without cats.

This caramel-colored hunk spends his time chasing after bouncy, squeaky balls and playing tug-of-war. He also knows commands such as “sit” and “that’s enough,” and he is leash trained. Better yet, he is house trained!

Butterball was surrendered to the SPCA of Texas on March 27 because his previous family had more pets than they could care for.

Come meet Butterball (#113177) today at the SPCA of Texas’ Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center in Dallas at 2400 Lone Star Dr., near I-30 and Hampton Road. The center is open seven days a week, noon-6 pm.

Regular adoption fees are $95-$125 for puppies 0-6 months, $75-$95 for adult dogs 6 months or older, $50 for senior dogs 7 years or older, $50 for VIP dogs, $95 for kittens, $75 for adult cats, $50 for senior cats 7 years and older, and $50 for VIP cats.

The adoption fee includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, heartworm test for dogs 6 months and older, initial heartworm preventative for dogs, feline leukemia test for cats 4 months and older, microchip, rabies tag, and free leash or cat carrier. Dallas animal shelter puts limit on intake to avoid spreading disease

Dallas' animal shelter is placing limits on taking on dogs to try and avoid spreading illness.

According to a release, Dallas Animal Services is combating a round of Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD) that is making dogs at the shelter ill.

Testing is taking place to understand the underlying cause, to determine the proper cleaning and medical protocols so the disease does not spread further, and they are awaiting lab results.

For the safety of Dallas dogs, DAS will begin temporarily limiting intake over the counter to critically sick or injured dogs.

DAS encourages struggling pet owners that are considering surrendering their pets to visit www.bedallas90.org/pet-resources to access pet support resources and DAS’ Home to Home Program, which helps residents locate adopters and avoid the shelter.

Residents who find friendly lost dogs are asked to help out by scheduling a time to have them vaccinated, then taking them home for three days while their vaccines take effect.

DAS will provide resources to help find the dog’s owner and if unsuccessful, the finder can bring the dog into DAS.
