Pedal to the Metal
DART wants to give your bike a downtown tune-up
If you've ever tried to cycle to work in downtown Dallas, you know the old aphorism is true: Biking ain't easy. But DART wants to ease the pain of pedaling. On May 17 — National Bike to Work Day, mind you — DART will host bike energizing activities at three DART stations as well as the intersection of the Bluebonnet and Chisholm Trail in Plano.
Downtown Garland station, Arapaho Station in Richardson and Akard Station in Dallas will be transformed into a biker's paradise from 7 to 9:30 am. The aforementioned Bike Energizer Stations will have information about the host cities' bike initiatives and offer bike promotional items, giveaways from local vendors, and refreshments and tune-ups.
Biking is fast becoming a popular mode of transportation in dense, urban communities, and Dallas has been wrestling with how to deal with the increased interest in cycling. The city passed its first ordinance protecting cyclists from motorists in December 2012.
Out west, Fort Worth launched a bike share program on April 22. Although Dallas doesn't have its own communal program, a number of biking organizations have cropped up recently, and the city is in the midst of an extensive bike plan to connect various trails.
All vehicles run by DART and the Trinity Railway Express, which operates in Dallas and Fort Worth, are equipped with bike racks.
