Charity Profile
This long-standing charity makes a mission out of saving babies
Not many charities can claim to date back to the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, but it was his personal struggle with polio that led him to create the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, better known as the March of Dimes.
After polio was eradicated in the United States, the March of Dimes formed its current mission of preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Today, one in 10 babies is born prematurely in America, a number that has decreased significantly, thanks in large part to the March of Dimes’ Prematurity Campaign.
March of Dimes partners with local and state healthcare systems to improve the health of expectant mothers across the globe. Programs extend from all 50 United States, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico to China, Lebanon, Nigeria, and beyond.
In 2014, the organization opened two new Prematurity Research Centers and offered support to more than 93,000 families who had a baby admitted to a newborn intensive care units across the nation.
