Dallas' main outdoor concert arena takes back its favorite name
Gexa Energy Pavilion, Dallas' main outdoor concert arena, has changed its name back to a handle that is a sentimental favorite. The venue is now called Starplex Pavilion.
The name change was revealed in a press release sent out by concert promoter Live Nation, announcing a summer tour with Chicago and the Doobie Brothers. Among the 30 dates extending from June 7 through July 30 is a stop in Dallas on June 16, at "Starplex Pavilion."
Live Nation marketing director Matthew Leishman confirmed to the Dallas Morning News that the name had been changed, with no details.
The shed has had a number of name changes since it opened in 1988 as Coca-Cola Starplex Amphitheatre, with every change prompting nostalgia for the name being replaced.
Depending on its corporate partnerships, names have included Smirnoff Music Centre, Superpages.com Center, and most recently Gexa Energy Pavilion, its name since 2011.
Since the venue's deal with Gexa Energy has now expired, there's a new twitter account, Starplex Pavilion, which was created in December.
