Links We Love
First social network, bizarre world of Planet Fitness and more links we love right now
Editor's note: There's so much that's beautiful, funny, smart and informative on the Internet. Problem is, there's also a bunch of garbage. Here's the best of the web right now:
1. Crocs, free Tootsie Rolls and other things you will never see in a gym except Planet Fitness. The hashtag #onlyatplanetfitness is a special place, filled with unique photos of events wholly unrelated to fitness, like reading the Sunday newspaper, eating free pizza and Tootsie Rolls, and working out in overalls.
2. Teen's app helps pay family's bills. At 17, Michael Sayman is contributing more than his fair share at home, and we're not talking about doing the dishes and mowing the lawn. Sayman's app, 4 Snaps, is helping to pay off his parents' mortgage.
3. The greatest moments in Friends history via GIF. What better way to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Friends finale than with a medium that most of us hadn't even heard of a decade ago? If you'd rather take a trip down memory lane in a more historically appropriate way, read this 1995 article from Rolling Stone titled "6 Lives on Videotape."
4. Plano girl's plea to One Direction goes viral. Fifteen-year-old Nicole Wilson wanted to spend her birthday at a One Direction concert. Tragically, the Plano teen died May 3 of complications from diabetes. Her sister, Kelly, has made it her mission to get the British boy band to dedicate a song to Nicole at the concert.
5. 2,300-year-old rock formations in Peru are examples of ancient social technology. We may think we're cutting edge when we post party invites on social media for all of our friends to see, but as it turns out, we're just following the lead of an ancient Andean civilization. The Paracas culture posted messages on mountaintops to show people how to get to their parties. Rock on.
