Cotton Bowl in Arlington vows to go on despite looming winter storm
Neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor hail is about to stop the Cotton Bowl: According to a statement from College Football Playoff officials, the big game between Texas and Ohio State — slated to take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on January 10 — is still on schedule, despite an unpredictable winter storm bearing down on Dallas-Fort Worth.
Weather watchers are predicting 3-6 inches of snow on Thursday, January 9, with flurries starting on Wednesday night.
According to on3.com, Cotton Bowl officials met with emergency management, law enforcement, College Football Playoff leadership, and meteorologists, but with “little to no serious discussion” about rescheduling the game or any of its accompanying fan events, and the teams are expected to start arriving in DFW on January 9.
The game itself is played inside a dome, but the variable is in getting to and from the dome, with the possibility of slippery roads.
According to Accuweather, the high temperature on Friday will be 38 degrees, with "some snow in the morning, low clouds and very cold, turning breezy in the afternoon. Expect slippery travel early, then some improvement."
“We are routinely monitoring weather reports and we are in close contact with AT&T Stadium and local officials,” says the Cotton Bowl statement. “We always have plans for inclement weather. Should conditions warrant it, we will communicate to everyone attending and connected with this year’s Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.”
"The teams arrive as planned, and the 2025 CFP Semifinal at the 89th Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic will kick off on Friday evening as scheduled," their post says, with just the tiniest bit of a snippy tone. "North Texas highways are already being brined and plans are in place to assure a safe environment for everyone in and around AT&T Stadium on game day."
Some of the comments are good including one that says "These games need to be played in the north, away from the snowflakes." Another observed that "The Super Bowl at Jerry's Stadium did not go well in bad weather."
Kickoff will take place at 6:30 pm from AT&T Stadium.
