It's almost the most magical time of year in Dallas: State Fair of Texas time. The Texas tradition runs September 29-October 22 at Fair Park, drawing literally millions of people eager for food, fun, games, rides, and more (last year broke the all-time attendance record with 2,547,289!).
But did you know that most of North Texas waits until days 22-24 to attend the Fair? Give yourself a little more elbow room — and shorter lines at the Fletcher's Corny Dog stands — by coming during the first week.
Here are five reasons why you'll want to visit early:
1. Be the first to take a selfie with Big Tex
It's tradition to pose with the world's tallest cowboy, but during busier times you might find unwanted additions in your photo. Say "howdy" to the Fair's official greeter before the crowds swarm into your selfie.
2. Sample the sweet and savory snacks
Let's be honest: We wait all year for the chance to chow down on Fair food. Whether you're ready to try this year's Big Tex Choice Awards finalists and winners or have already mapped out where you're getting a turkey leg and corn on the cob, you'll want to make a special effort to come on a Thursday.
That's when participating food vendors are offering one of their signature menu items at a reduced price, ranging from mini versions to regular-size items. This happens every Thursday during the Fair.
3. Hold on for thrilling rides
Also in the spirit of saving, you can enjoy shorter lines and cheaper prices on most Midway rides on Tuesdays. That's when four coupons will gain you entry to most rides, with Kiddie rides discounted to three coupons. Excluded are the Thrillway and the Texas Star Ferris Wheel.
4. Enjoy better concert views
All live music is included with your Fair admission, but you'll want to make a special effort to see all the stars scheduled for opening week. Big names like Lonestar, Ceelo Green, 38 Special, and Bowling for Soup join a roster of regional faves on the Chevrolet Main Stage and Bud Light Stage.
