Wendy Davis filibuster sparks crazy interest in pink sneakers
The interwebs are buzzing about State Sen. Wendy Davis and her historic 10-hour filibuster. With a roaring crowd of feminist supporters, Davis stood for hours — unable to lean, sit or take breaks — and succeeded in shutting down Senate Bill 5, one of the strictest abortion bills in the country.
And she did it all sporting a pair of pink Mizuno Wave Riders, which may be the hottest sneakers on the market right now.
"[Mizuno's] daily website traffic totals nearly double compared to the same day last week," says company spokesperson Harper Cornell.
"The resulting attention from media and social media has driven a significant increase in traffic to MizunoRunning.com and the Wave Rider 16 product page, specifically," says Harper Cornell, the public relations manager at Mizuno. "[Mizuno's] daily website traffic totals nearly double compared to the same day last week, and the Wave Rider 16 product page led as the No. 1 viewed page."
"[The company] is proud of the running shoes [it] develops for customers and know the Wave Rider’s design provides the comfort and cushioning needed for any endurance event, whether it’s a 5K, a marathon or 10-hour filibuster." Suggested retail price: $114.99.
Because Mizuno is a privately held company, Cornell was unable to disclose if sales had noticeably increased and emphasized that although the company appreciate's Davis' choice in footwear, Mizuno does not maintain a corporate position related to the issue in discussion.
For those hoping to get their hands on a pair of these now-historic shoes, you're in luck. A quick call to Luke's Locker on Mockingbird Lane revealed that the store has the shoes in stock. (We also weren't the first to inquire.) It's also worth your time to read the comical Mizuno Wave Rider 16 reviews on Amazon.com, which note that shoes are "marathon shoe[s] for marathon filibustering" and "fit perfectly up a Republican's rear."
