Modern Move
Knox District modern furniture studio decamps to Dallas’ NorthPark Center

Modern design mecca Design Within Reach is moving off McKinney Avenue, but its new address is just as hot as Knox District: NorthPark Center. Design Within Reach will open in a temporary showroom on level one, between Neiman Marcus and Dillard’s, in the former Ralph Lauren space.
We say temporary because DWR will get a permanent home elsewhere at NorthPark, but exactly where is being kept under wraps for now. First day of business is projected for March 24.
A DWR spokesperson says Knox District has been a great location for the store, but ultimately a need for more space drove the decision. The new location at NorthPark will be double the size of the current studio. All that foot traffic had to be a draw: NorthPark gets more than 26 million visitors annually.
The transitional showroom will feature 13 room vignettes comprising the modern furniture and decor for which the brand is known. Designers include Charles and Ray Eames, Chris Hardy, Egg Collective, George Nelson, Jens Risom, and Norm Architects.
The McKinney Avenue studio closes on March 23. We know what you're wondering: Is there a sale? Actually, there are two.
The first is the company-wide semi-annual sale, which means nearly everything (excluding Herman Miller and Knoll) is 15 percent off. That ends March 17. You can also still score a deal from the floor sample sale; select merch is 30 to 50 percent off. For example, says studio manager (and CultureMap Stylemaker) David Goltl, an Arne Jacobsen Egg Chair can be had for 30 percent off retail.
In the end, the move to NorthPark made a lot of sense, says DWR president John McPhee.
“NorthPark isn’t an ordinary mall,” he says. “Its modern design aesthetic and selection of co-tenants made our decision an easy one.”
