Dallas House Hunters
Old Lake Highlands ranch with HGTV cred can be yours for less than $300,000
With the real estate market currently sizzling in Dallas, a good starter home is hard to find. But our friends at Candy’s Dirt have uncovered one. Joanna England has the scoop on 881 Berkinshire Dr. in Old Lake Highlands, which owners Ashley and Steven Walton found with the help of HGTV’s House Hunters.
The couple says they were looking for a project when they moved out of their Uptown apartment in 2010, and they found it in this 1954 ranch near Hexter Elementary. At 1,292 square feet, with three bedrooms and one-and-a-half baths, the size is just right for a couple or small family.
They put some TLC into it, transforming the once-red kitchen with outdated everything into a bright, functional space with granite-topped center island. They opened up the entryway to the kitchen from the living area, improving the flow.
The home boasts soft contemporary touches and a neutral color scheme, so anyone can move right in. Cozy bedrooms get lots of light, and hardwoods run throughout the living and sleeping spaces.
Like the kitchen, the full bath got an overhaul. Sleek fixtures and contemporary tilework from floor to shower bring the space up-to-date, making the most of its small footprint.
Out back is a covered patio, with plenty of room for seating. The backyard also has ample green space for dogs and kids to run around.
According to Candy’s Dirt, agent Lauren Valek Farris got several phone calls the morning the property officially hit the market on July 29, so this one’s bound to go fast — especially with the dearth of inventory for first-timers. List price: $269,000.
