    This week in gluttony

These are the 8 best food and drink events in Dallas this week

There's a celebration of all things watermelon this week.

August starts with two chances to detox and retox: there's poolside yoga paired with margaritas and a boxing class paired with low-carb beer. After all that extra sweating this week, cool off with a watermelon party by week’s end.

    Wednesday, August 2

Movement Live by Michelob Ultra at American Airlines Center
Combine beer with a boxing-based workout during this complimentary group fitness class and dance party hosted by Michelob Ultra. Participants will take place in a 45-minute shadow boxing and strength workout followed by a party with DJ dance music and Michelob Ultra. The multi-city workout tour – which has already made stops in Charlotte, Atlanta, and Chicago – is in partnership with Rumble Boxing and Live Nation. Doors open at 6 pm and the workout starts at 6:30 pm.

    Thursday, August 3

National IPA Day at Four Corners Brewing Co.
It’s National IPA Day and the independent Dallas brewery will celebrate with beer specials on the super cheap. All IPAs will be $5 a pint from 3-11 pm both Thursday and Friday. The lineup includes Hace Frío cold IPA (7.3% ABV), El Chingón American IPA (7.3% ABV), La Chingona double IPA (9% ABV), Chingo Haze New England IPA (6.7% ABV), and Imperial Hazy double New England IPA (8% ABV). All to-go cans of IPA will also be 20 percent off. Don’t miss Four Corners’ lively game of Loteria (aka Mexican bingo) on Thursday, too.

Meat and Greet at The Douglas
The Snider Plaza steakhouse will host a four-course whiskey pairing dinner featuring Michter’s Distillery. Guests will indulge in seared scallops, miso corn soup with bacon bourbon jam, espresso-rubbed Wagyu strip loin, and peach cobbler with whiskey caramel sauce. All courses will be paired with straight whiskey pours. Dinner is $175, plus tax and gratuity, and starts at 7 pm with an Old Fashioned cocktail.

    Friday, August 4

    South Polk Pizzeria Grand Opening
South Polk Pizzeria in Dallas' Oak Cliff, where chef Terrill Burnett is slinging perfect pies in a pizza desert, will host a grand opening event on Friday afternoon from 3-6 pm, with free gourmet sno cones from A Touch of Sno and ribbon cutting at 5 pm.

Jamaican Independence Day Celebration at The Island Spot
Relish in Jamaican culture and cuisine during this celebration at Carrolton’s authentic Jamaican restaurant, The Island Spot. There’ll be a live reggae band from 7-10 pm and $6 rum punch to wash down dishes like fried plantains, jerk wings, curry goat, brown stew chicken, and braised oxtails. Friday also means it’s hookah night.

    Saturday, August 5

Watermelon Day at Dallas Farmers Market
The fifth annual event will feature everything watermelon, including complimentary slices, a watermelon eating contest, and even photos with the 2023 Watermelon Queen. Enjoy chef demos, live music, face painting, a petting zoo, kids crafts, and more than 100 farmers market vendors. The event will run from 9 am-5 pm.

    Sunday, August 6

    Yogarita at The Stoneleigh
Start your Sunday with a refreshing poolside yoga class and cocktail at one of Dallas’ most storied hotels. The $40 ticket (plus tax and a small fee) includes a one-hour yoga class followed by a Yogarita cocktail (made with Casamigos Tequila) and a coastal-inspired fish taco from the hotel restaurant, Perle on Maple. But there’s more. All participants will also be treated to a complimentary skin refresh from HeyDey Skincare and a chance to shop The Eclectic Chain permanent jewelry pop-up. Class begins at 10:30 am.

    Monday, August 7

    Wine Night at Oddfellows
The Bishop Arts eatery is launching a Wine Night program every Monday starting August 7. The program debuts with three "perfect pairings" of rose and orange wines that complement specific hors d'oeuvres-style bites that pair well with the selected wines. A shared evening of wine flights and snacks for two is $45.

A longtime Dallas restaurant is closing in 2026: Sevy's Grill, which has been open at 8201 Preston Rd. near Preston Center for nearly 30 years, will close on June 27, 2026.

According to a release from the owners, they're closing due to what appears to be an increase in rent.

"After months of negotiations, we were not able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement for our fourth 10-year lease," the post said.

The restaurant is located in Preston Sherry Plaza, which was acquired in September 2025 by Austin-based Endeavor Real Estate. Somebody gotta foot the bill.

Sevy's says they are looking at other locations.

"Our focus now is to finish these next 6+ months taking care of our guests and staff at the same caring level we built our brand on: Warm, professional service, consistently good food and a comfortable ambiance where the guest is always first," the post says. "First on our list of priorities is taking care of our guests in December and all the wonderful celebrations of family, friends and business groups. We do still have some availability for reservations, including our last New Years Eve at Preston Sherry. Come celebrate with us as the exciting anticipation of a new year for all of us."

"Our second priority will be the search for a new location to continue doing what we love," they said. "We are already reviewing possible sites and will keep everyone updated regularly."

Owned by chef Jim "Sevy" Severson and his wife Amy Severson, the restaurant has long been a neighborhood favorite with a lively bar scene, and was nominated in CultureMap's 2018 Tastemaker Awards for Best Neighborhood Restaurant. They were a frequent choice for winemaker events and are also known for the longevity of their staff.

"Eight team members have been with us all 29+ years, with an average tenure in the kitchen of 15+ years and a Management team that you all know," their post said. "Come support our staff as we celebrate the next 6+ months.Thank you again for your support through all the normal challenges of running a restaurant as well as economic downturns, market bubbles, Y2K, and of course the COVID era. As I tell my family and friends to “enjoy the ride in life”, wow, what an amazing ride it has been for us! And as always, Sevy’s Grill is here for you."
