    Snack attack

Snack Global Kitchen on Henderson closes temporarily to prep for new concept

    Teresa Gubbins
    Oct 10, 2012 | 9:30 am

Snack Global Kitchen + Bar, the Henderson Avenue restaurant from Avner Samuel and chef-partner Jon Stevens featuring small plates with recipes from around the globe, will no longer be featuring small plates with recipes from around the globe.

The restaurant has been closed since Sunday brunch and won't reopen until next week, when it debuts a new concept, Samuel says.

"We're trying to reconcept that," he says. "We've changed the menu three times, and we're still not where we want to be."

"I don’t think it’s the location," Samuel says. "I think that what we did was maybe too adventurous for the area and maybe for the city."

The location has had a number of entities already, including a pizza joint and Horne & Dekker, a restaurant from colorful Shawn Horne, the new manager at Stephan Pyles' Stampede 66. But Samuel says he doesn't think the space is jinxed.

"I don’t think it’s the location," he says. "I never believe that stuff. If I was able to get people into Snider Plaza with Bistro A, then I think I can overcome a bad location. I think that what we did was maybe too adventurous for the area and maybe for the city."

He says that he is reconcepting and will reopen within a week or two.

A staffer at a neighboring business says that she heard the new concept would be "more of a bar-style place."

In mid-September, the restaurant sent out a press release announcing that it had "new management and a new attitude." The new general manager is Vito Calo, who worked at Samuel's other concept, Nosh Euro Bistro, and who told Eater that the menu had been completely overhauled, switching its focus from small plates to more traditional appetizers and entrees.

Since Calo came on board, Snack cut back on its hours, including shutting down on Sunday nights.

Walmart Supercenter to woo buzzy town of Melissa with new supermarket

The most popular suburb in all of DFW is getting a new superstore: The town is Melissa, and it's landing a Walmart Supercenter, which will open at 1950 McKinney St. on November 5 with fanfare, celebration, and Troy Aikman.

This store marks the 393rd Supercenter location in Texas, and is the third supermarket chain to expand to Melissa since 2024.

The store will showcase the Walmart “Store of the Future” concept, which they say has better layout with an emphasis on connecting the digital and physical shopping experience. Features include a full-service Walmart Fuel Center gas station, pharmacy with drive-thrus, and updated department layouts.

The Melissa store will span more than 170,000 square feet, and feature expanded grocery pickup and delivery, a new vision center and pharmacy layout, and enhanced fashion with brand names like Free Assembly.

The festivities begn at 7:30 am with the Melissa High School band and country artist Gloria Anderson. They'll offer supplier demos, pharmacy/vision screenings, food trucks, and giveaways. Plus a meet-and-greet with special guests Troy Aikman and the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders at 11:30 am—12:30 pm.

Morning activities in the parking lot will close at 2 pm, then reopen at 5 pm for the Winter Wonderland Holiday Showcase from 5-8:30 pm, featuring a live fashion show with 12 models in Walmart fashion, styled by influencers, plus DJ MC Lyte, beauty suppliers offering demos and giveaways, appetizer and product sampling, toy experiences, and photo ops.

Walmart is in renovation mode: They're remodeling 67 stores across Texas, and more than 650 stores across the U.S.

Meanwhile, Melissa is the apple of many supermarket chains' eyes. It started in October 2024, when Kroger’s Dallas Division opened a Kroger Marketplace in Melissa, featuring a cheese shop and an in-house Starbucks – the company’s first new store in North Texas since 2019 and the first major supermarket for Melissa. Texas supermarket giant H-E-B followed suit by opening a copycat store in Melissa in May 2025.
