UPDATE: On June 21, Float Fest announced this year's event is canceled. "We are extremely saddened to announce today that Float Fest 2019 is being cancelled," said organizers in a release. "This was a difficult decision to make, but due to several recent roadblocks outside of our control and in an effort to do right by our fans, the decision to cancel the event was the best option."
The only festival to combine everything Texans love — floating the river, music, camping, and independence— is drifting away from its original location. Float Fest has announced it is moving from its home in San Marcos to a private ranch in Gonzales, Texas, about fours hours south of Dallas.
Organizers say the biggest reason for the move is accessibility. As a combination music festival, floating trip, and camping experience, the private ranch offers river access directly from the property, meaning attendees no longer need to take shuttles to tube like in years past. Now, concertgoers won't have to leave the campsite to take a dip.
"We have been working on another location for months," said Marcus Federman, founder of Float Fest, in a release. "We have been thinking about moving the festival for some time now to allow for an expansion and more attendees, and a great opportunity presented itself with Gonzales."
Federman also points out that Gonzales, known as "the Lexington of Texas," is considered the birthplace of the Texas Revolution and, thus, its independence. Whether those skirmishing settlers envisioned a future of flower crowns and Lone Stars as they blew the town canon remains unknown.
The new locale on the Guadalupe River is three times the size of the San Marcos site, which translates into potentially thousands of attendees. Organizers are also offering bigger campsites this year as well as "improved traffic flow with multiple exit points."
Now in its sixth year, Float Fest returns July 20-21 with single-day, weekend, and VIP passes. Attendees can also choose from additional tubing packages, RV hook ups, and something called a "Frigid Float Lounge" that is basically an air-conditioned room you pay money to stand in.
