US-75 north of Dallas will see overnight closures in HOV lane project
A segment of US-75 north of Dallas between George Bush Turnpike and SH121 will see intermittent closures beginning March 4.
According to a release from the Texas Department of Transportation, drivers can expect closures of the HOV lanes north and southbound on US 75, between SH 190/President George Bush Turnpike and the SH 121/Sam Rayburn Tollway/Spur 399, starting Monday, March 4 at 9 pm, until 5 am Tuesday, March 5.
Closures will continue nightly on weeknights through fall 2024 as part of a $58.8 million project to reduce traffic by using the US 75 HOV lanes in Collin and Dallas counties differently.
The lanes will be converted into "technology lanes" that would give access to more drivers, including electric vehicles, low-emission vehicles, and motorcycles, during peak hours on weekdays from 7-9 am and 4-6 pm.
And then all vehicles could use the lanes during non-rush hour.
The HOV lanes are currently perceived as being underutilized. According to data from TxDOT, they carrying about 1,250 vehicles per hour going in one direction during rush hour traffic, and are underutilized throughout much of the day.
A TxDOT spokesperson said the proposal would provide more flexibility for the public to use those lanes, while still providing access to HOV users during peak hours.
The new technology lanes will be marked off by striped lines rather than the plastic barriers currently in use.
