Best Dressed Southerners

8 eclectic Texans show enough style savvy to earn best-dressed 2015 title

Diana Oates
Feb 19, 2015 | 2:03 pm

Lifestyle magazine Southern Living has unleashed it latest listicle, this time honoring the 50 best-dressed Southerners. The editors proclaimed that "personal style isn't just about clothes" and searched high, low and sometimes online to find the folks who had the freshest looks in our favorite part of the country. Eight Texans made the cut.

The two Dallasites on the list are Cristina Lynch and Virginia Savage McAlester. Lynch owns Mi Golondrina, a line of clothing, bedding and jewelry rich with Mexican heritage. She gets style inspiration from her mother, from whom she always loved to borrow traditional Mexican clothing. Her mom also taught her not to worry too much about what people think.

McAlester, a historic preservationist and author of A Field Guide to American Houses, says she is heavily influenced by Coco Chanel, who not only designed timeless clothing — and introduced the world to the little black dress — but also ran a business during a time when few women did.

Austin nabbed three spots — four if you count the one-two musical punch that is Jamestown Revival. The duo, Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance, go for "traditionally rugged" with a hint of "classic gentleman" in their style. They count Robert Redford and Paul Newman among their style icons. Swoon.

What is it about Austin guys and Robert Redford? Joshua Bingaman, founder of Helm Boots, appreciates the actor's ability to adapt to changing styles over time. Bingaman also notes that style is "who you are as a person, and what you wear is a translation of that."

Southern Living recently declared Camille Styles is a blogger to watch in 2015, so we aren't too shocked to see her name on this list as well. She admires the late Oscar de la Renta, who encouraged people to find their own personal style versus simply wearing what is fashionable. Styles chooses clothes that are flattering over what is trendy.

Another gal yanked from the bloggers-to-watch list is Caroline Harper Knapp. This polished mom, and author of House of Harper, says that the women of New York taught her that less could really be more. They also taught her to always be confident in your own skin, which she had to put into practice after her family recently relocated to Houston.

Houston's second nod: Alba Huerta, owner of Julep Bar, who says her Lucchese boot collection is precious to her. She told SL that "trends are set by those who set themselves apart from the rest, and that is good advice for fashion and anything else."

You can check out the rest of the fashionable 50 here.

Sprinkles' pizzeria spinoff debuts in Dallas, first outside California

Pizzana

Get ready for some celebrated pizza.

Pizza is on with the imminent arrival of Pizzana, the restaurant from the founders of Sprinkles Cupcakes, opening at 3219 Knox St. on November 15.

Pizzana debuted in Los Angeles in 2017, and as a release notes, this is the first location outside California. It stars pizzaiolo Daniele Uditi, who has appeared on Hulu's "Best in Dough" pizza competition series.

They ferment their dough for 48 hours. Toppings blend traditional with Pizzana originals such as Uditi's signature cacio e pepe pizza, which a release claims has been copied by pizza places far and wide. Not in Dallas though! Buck up.

The menu includes pizzas, antipasti, salads, desserts, and vegan options. They're also doing a gluten-free crust.

Much like Shake Shack, they're doing a collaboration with a local: a pizza with ingredients from BBQ restaurant Pecan Lodge featuring brisket, smoked fior di latte, jalapeño, pickled red onion, fontina crema, cilantro, and San Marzano barbecue sauce.

There's also a Dallas-only dessert, an apple crisp featuring Texas-based whiskey brand Herman Marshall is topped with vanilla ice cream, which the release calls creamy. Creamy is definitely preferable in a vanilla ice cream to icy, grainy, or hard.

"Dallas is a very special city and has always been so welcoming to Sprinkles Cupcakes," Candace Nelson says in a statement. "Daniele, Charles, and I are so looking forward to sharing Pizzana with the Dallas community. "Pizzana’s menu will satisfy any carb carving and everything on the menu is worth the indulgence.”

The restaurant seats 45, with banquettes and signature Mediterranean blue colors. Each table features Pizzana's first-of-its-kind pizza towers, custom-crafted for hot pies to be presented and stacked above the surface of the table.

They'll be open lunch and dinner daily, until 10 pm Sunday-Thursday and 11 pm Friday and Saturday.

Frisco residents rally city officials to build its first real animal shelter

Citizens for Animal Protection

The city of Frisco does not currently have an animal shelter.

Frisco is well known as one of the fastest-growing cities in not only Texas but also the U.S. - and yet still does not have an animal shelter.

But residents are working to change that, and one of the key steps will be to persuade the city to put a shelter up for a vote in Frisco’s upcoming bond election in May 2023.

First: They must persuade a city committee to nudge the idea on to Frisco's City Council.

That'll happen on November 14 at 5:30 pm when a proposal is presented to Frisco's Citizen Bond Committee, which reviews funding proposals for city projects.

It's been a hard-fought battle for animal advocates in Frisco such as grassroots group Frisco's Pet Project, who've diligently petitioned a reluctant city council since 2018 to adopt policies addressing the health, safety, and welfare of animals and pets in Frisco, including a municipal animal shelter.

[Above, an example of one of the various grassroots groups that have formed to network lost and found pets in Frisco.]

"Frisco Animal Services currently falls under the Police Department," says Frisco's Pet Project founder Marla Fields. "When lost or stray animals are found, they're currently being transported to Collin County Animal Services, the county shelter, which struggles to provide space for 13 cities and unincorporated areas."

"Frisco also lacks a temporary-holding space for animals found, forcing them to sit in the back of a truck while officers search for owners," Fields says.

Frisco residents have been left to personally rescue pets and try to find owners themselves, to avoid the drive to McKinney.

"There are more than five social media pages dedicated to reuniting pets with owners in an attempt to avoid adding to the shelter’s intake," Fields says. "Trying to find a lost pet or posting photos of pets you've found on all these various sites is nerve-wracking and distressing when you've lost a pet."

An animal shelter has benefits to the community that extend beyond serving as a place to house lost and found animals.

"The obvious benefit is to reunite more pets with their owners faster, get animals off the streets, and provide a safe place for lost and injured animals," Fields says. "But a shelter can also host community outreach programs, in-house workshops, including low-cost shots and spay & neuter clinics, micro-chipping, and especially volunteer opportunities, which the city itself calls 'the heart of a community'."

Of the 12 largest cities in Texas, Frisco is the only city without an animal shelter.

Frisco's Mayor and City Council have previously stated that an animal shelter could only be built if put on a bond.

"Whether you personally agree to the idea of having a shelter or not, I think it's only fair that an animal shelter be put on the ballot for residents to vote on in May," Fields says.
