    Fall Fashion Preview

Billy Reid's blanket coverage for stylish men appeals to both sexes

    Clifford Pugh
    Feb 28, 2014 | 2:31 pm

For a Southern boy, Billy Reid sure does like winter. That's because Reid — who was raised in Louisiana and bases his business in Florence, Alabama, with thriving stores in Houston, Dallas and Austin — gets a kick out of designing coats and other outerwear.

"It's my favorite category to work on," he said backstage before his New York Fashion Week show at the cloister-like Highland Hotel.

His fall/winter collection boasts an abundance of terrific-looking coats in blanket stripes, wallpaper jacquards, brushed plaids and houndstooth patterns. For his show, Reid even included some models with stadium blankets wrapped around their blanket-patterned coats.

"Our female customers buy a lot of men's pieces. Our men's customers buy women's pieces," Reid said. "It just sort of happens."

"It started as an idea of developing blankets, and that sort of led us to a whole new way of developing fabrications and textiles," he said. "That's what I love to do."

Just about every model who strolled the length of the hotel's Refectory — a Gothic hall that served as the dining space in an Episcopalian seminary and is one of the nicest settings I've seen in a decade of covering Fashion Week activities — was swathed in eye-catching outerwear. The varied looks included a mustard-colored cashmere duffle, fur-lined parkas, a leather pea coat and a furry rabbit vest over a fleece-lined hoodie.

Several overcoats in soft brushed fabric dipped to calf level, while a nubby alpaca shirt jacket was cut close to the body, along with trim cargo pants in dark blue or green. Shades of blue and indigo mixed with toasty colors of gold and bordeaux (the latter in a pair of body-hugging velvet pants).

"We always show a lot of tailored garments. That's a big part of our business," Reid said. "Customers have really been responding to uniqueness, whether it be shape or fabrication. Also we're getting really good response in our stores to luxury, whether it be cashmere or touches of fur."

Slacks were cut a little looser like track pants, and whimsical dancing foxes dotted some sweaters. Shirts were oversized, because doesn't every man's wardrobe need at least one rumpled white shirt that hangs to mid-thigh? It's likely that women will cotton to the big boyfriend shirts as well.

While developing his collections for both sexes (although only menswear was shown in New York), Reid found that they started to influence each other.

"You put that soft blanket shape on a man, and he can looked rugged, but on a woman it can have a totally different feel. I love playing with that," Reid said. "Our female customers buy a lot of men's pieces. Our men's customers buy women's pieces. It's not anything intentional; it just sort of happens. It's kind of fun to balance that and see where it takes you."

Reid, who said he always gets nervous before a show, is considerably more relaxed when visiting his boutiques. He is planning trips to his Texas stores soon for a little freshening up.

"It's like a well-visited house," he said. "Sometimes you have to turn the furniture, put on some new paint, change the racks. We're going to have some fun with it. It's almost like a reopening of the environment."

August is here and so is Where to Shop, the monthly CultureMap Dallas column that brings together all the latest new stores and shopping experiences in one convenient roundup.

August is a big shopping month, thanks to the annual Tax-Free Weekend, taking place in Texas from August 8-10. But these stores and new collections can be shopped at 24-7.

Here's where to shop in Dallas right now:

    Cosentino
The Cosentino Group just opened a showroom in Dallas' Design District at 1135 Dragon St. It's a $1.76-million 6,200-square-foot space with a warehouse and VIP kitchen space, created in collaboration with BauTeam and Miele, ideal for private demos, events, and culinary activities. (They also have a huge warehouse up by 635 and I-35.) Cosentino does innovative surfaces for architecture and design including ecofriendly brands such as Silestone, Dekton, and Sensa, equally at home in residential or commercial spaces. Dallas is one of three new showrooms, along with Honolulu and Richmond, bringing the total to 12 in the U.S. and 41 worldwide. Each provides access to their latest product launches, including Le Chic Bohème by Silestone, Silestone Ukiyo (both featuring low-silica composition), and the carbon-neutral Dekton Pietra Edition.

    Gap and Beis luggage
Gap has teamed up with Beis, the lifestyle brand founded by actress Shay Mitchell, on a limited-edition collection of apparel, luggage, and travel bags. The 26 pieces include clever Cargo Barrel Pants that can transform into cargo shorts; a jumpsuit that can be worn as a full jumpsuit or folded down into pants; and a travel hoodie with a built-in inflatable neck pillow in the hood. Luggage includes Beis' bestselling Carry-On Roller, available in a limited-edition denim blue; the Denim Weekender, a carry-on with a wide opening and separate bottom storage for shoes, toiletries, or hair dryer; and a denim backpack with a padded interior sleeve that fits most laptops and has a built-in key leash.

    Monica Rich Kosann
New sterling silver collection from designer Monica Rich Kosann is targeted to students "for everyday wear." (Versus the galas students are attending on weekends?) Pieces include stackable rings, a Locket Necklace, a pendant with White Sapphire (sorry, the chain is extra), and an Evil Eye Charm (chain also not included), with prices ranging from $70 to $480. Monica Rich Kosann is sold at Neiman Marcus NorthPark, Bachendorf's Galleria Dallas, or online.

Paula Rosen Jewelry at Free People
California jewelry designer has a selection of pieces now available to shop online at Free People. Paula Rosen is known for luxury details on everyday wearable pieces, incorporating mixed metals and chunky details — a nice way of saying they're not real gold but are instead a 14K Gold Rhodium Overlay. The collection at Free People includes the viral "I Love You Bracelet" ($245), plus Riley's Heart Bracelet ($170) & Necklace ($285).

    Ralph Lauren
High-fashion designer just opened a new store in Plano in the Legacy West Shopping Center, at 7700 Windrose Ave Suite G175, joining a high-end strip of shops such as Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, Warby Parker, Pockets, and more. The store offers Women’s Collection, Men’s Purple Label, Polo Ralph Lauren for Men and Women, and Double RL offerings. Decor is classic Ralph Lauren with wood wall cases, paneling, and ceiling beams, stained wood, natural fiber carpets, and a stone and bronze facade. There's one other Ralph Lauren store in the Dallas area at 4525 Cole Ave., where the designer relocated after more than 45 years in Highland Park Village. (There are also Polo Ralph Lauren outlet stores in Grand Prairie, Grapevine Mills, Allen, and Fort Worth.)
