Top spring YP parties, bagel shop closures and more popular stories this week

    Jennifer Chininis
    Feb 28, 2015 | 9:01 am

Editor’s note: Another week has come and gone, and there’s a lot we all probably missed. But we’re looking out for you, kid. Here are the most popular stories from this past week:

    1. Dallas’ Paul Quinn reinvents urban college model with some help from Mark Cuban. Paul Quinn College announced it will be adopting a new financial structure designed to reduce student debt while increasing real-world work experience. This “new urban college model” has several components, and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban helped Paul Quinn pull it off.

    2. The top Dallas young professional parties to put on your spring 2015 social calendar. Recently we highlighted the spring go-to galas and luncheons for the major fundraisers, but now we turn to the young movers and shakers who are poised to make an impact in the community. If you are new to town and looking for an organization to support, these events would be great places to start.

    3. Bagel chain shuts down Dallas-Fort Worth shops due to half-baked performance. As part of a national downsizing, five branches of Einstein Bros. Bagels are closing in Texas, including two in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Both are in Tarrant County: one in the West 7th District in Fort Worth and the other off I-30 in Arlington, in the same center as Whole Foods Market.

    4. Woman found dead in gruesome incident at Far North Dallas apartment. A 22-year-old man was arrested for capital murder in the death of Robin Bavousett, 50, who was found on the bathroom floor of her North Dallas apartment. She suffered blunt force trauma to the head, and her throat had been cut. The suspect, Ezekiel Cox of Henrico, Virginia, is being held on a $1 million bail.

    5. Downtown Plano cements hipster status with proposed food truck park. Plano is one step closer to getting a food truck park this week with the approval of a special use permit and preliminary site plan by the Planning and Zoning Commission. Hub Streat, the proposed food truck park and restaurant concept, is slated to sit at the corner of 14th Street and M Avenue, on a vacant 1.6-acre piece of land just east of downtown Plano.

Editor's note: It's time to look back at the top Dallas news of the week, which includes a change in plans for Steak and Ale and major transportation updates. Plus, two closures, including one with rock star ties. Get the details on the most popular Dallas stories below, then check out this guide to Memorial Day weekend fun.

    1. Local opening of Dallas chain Steak and Ale gets derailed. The long-in-the-works return of Steak and Ale in Dallas is being shelved for now. The casual steakhouse chain, which in its heyday had nearly 300 locations, is no longer opening a location it planned for in Grand Prairie.

    2. Dallas farm-to-table champion Profound Farms closes produce operation. A Dallas farm-to-table champion is pulling the plug: Profound Microfarms, the small farm in Lucas that provided locally grown produce to chefs and the general public for nearly a decade, is shutting down its growing operation and discontinuing deliveries.

    3. Greyhound bus finds new location to replace downtown Dallas terminal. There's a new location for the Greyhound bus terminal, which had been in downtown Dallas for more than 85 years. Flix North America, the parent company of FlixBus and Greyhound, will be relocating service to a new intercity bus terminal in northwest Dallas in late September 2025.

    4. Dallas approves $14.5 million for Buckner DART station project. The Dallas City Council unanimously approved a $14.5 million incentive for the Palladium Buckner Station Project, a proposed mixed-income and transit-oriented development project at the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) Buckner Light Rail Station at 8008 Elam Rd.

    5. Rock & Brews restaurant founded by KISS members closes in The Colony. A restaurant chain with rock star ties is closing. Rock & Brews, founded by KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, will close its location in The Colony after nine years.
