    Midcentury Time Capsule

Dream about a pristinely preserved midcentury? This Dallas home is it.

    Leah Shafer
    Apr 22, 2015 | 2:23 pm

Midcentury purists, take note: There’s a house in East Dallas that appears untouched since it was built in 1959, and it can be yours for $295,000. Located in Lochwood, 10504 Lake Gardens Dr. is 1,533 square feet of retro perfection, from Terrazzo floors and decorative dividers to original pendant light fixtures and knotty wood paneling.

This three-bedroom, two-bath time capsule, listed with with David Collier of David Griffin & Company, has been meticulously maintained — a rare treat for an enthusiast who wants to preserve original features. It is located near Easton and Garland roads on a street with large shade trees and small hills with many other 1950s houses. The lot is 98-by-101, with a large, green lawn and nicely manicured hedges.

Inside is an entryway with original Terrazzo floors and a decorative divider, which adds pattern and visual interest to the home’s entry and offers a glimpse of its incredible throwback appeal.

Immediately to the left is the breakfast area, with an original pendant lamp and breakfast bar, plus more Terrazzo floors and a large window. The kitchen has coral-colored laminate countertops, the original mint-green oven and a gray-and-white checkerboard laminate floor. There are three more original pendant lamps and dark wood paneling that matches the cabinets.

The nearby living area is large and brightly lit, with a brick fireplace that extends into another room divider, which doubles as a planter. The living room also provides access to the outdoors.

The master bedroom has a wall of closets and built-ins, including a vintage built-in television. Take a look at those mint green doors! The only thing in this room that isn’t pristine is the carpet — but, hey, that’s an easy fix. The master has more of that wood paneling too.

The master bathroom has original tile in two colors — peachy pink and baby blue — a walk-in shower, Formica countertops and a unique pegboard-style vanity front. The other two bedrooms share a full bathroom with the same Formica countertops and two-tone color scheme as the master bath.

The backyard has an open patio — fabulous for entertaining all those friends who will be dying to see what stays and what goes in this rarity of a home.

The McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) has awarded project grants to support quality-of-life projects that will benefit the community.

Following the submission of the grant applications, MCDC board members reviewed the funding requests and heard presentations from each applicant describing the impact of their proposed programs on the local community.

Among the nearly $37,000,000 in Project Grants awarded by MCDC are:

    • All-terrain vehicle and trailer for trail improvement projects – McKinney Parks Foundation, $20,000
    • Construction of 10 townhomes at the Cotton Groves development – Habitat for Humanity Collin County, $411,455
    • Construction of the eastside airport infrastructure and passenger terminal – McKinney National Airport, $30 million
    • Shelving, storage, and equipment to preserve and display historical artifacts – Collin County History Museum, $31,475
    • Infrastructure and site improvements at TPC Craig Ranch (this project is associated with The CJ Cup Byron Nelson) – Invited Clubs, $1.5 million, contingent upon extension of the CJ Cup through 2033
    • Infrastructure for the development of a new Hugs Café headquarters facility – Hugs Café, $970,000
    • Infrastructure improvements to the site of the Cannon Beach Surf Park project – Cannon Development Company, $4 million
    • Site improvements and foundation work to stabilize the historic Dulaney Cottage – Chestnut Square Heritage Village, $25,481

“These projects align directly with MCDC strategic priorities and our mission to work as a partner to fund community, cultural, and economic development projects in McKinney,” said MCDC Board Chair Angela Richardson-Woods. “Our vision to enhance the quality of life for residents of all ages and backgrounds is evident in these awarded grants.”

According to MCDC president Cindy Schneible, MCDC awards grants every year to projects that are eligible for consideration under state law. The total budgeted for grants on an annual basis averages about $18 million.

"The $37 million is a larger amount than in recent years – primarily because of the $30 million approved in support of McKinney National Airport," Schneible says.

In 1996, McKinney voters approved a half-cent sales tax to be used to provide grants to projects and events that would enhance McKinney’s aesthetic, cultural and leisure amenities. Over the past 25 years, MCDC has invested nearly $225 million back into the community.
