    Sweet Spring Ball

Sweetheart of a spring ball attracts the most generous philanthropists in Dallas

    Jennifer Chininis
    May 12, 2016 | 10:38 am

    What: 35th annual Sweetheart Ball

    Where: Brook Hollow Golf Club

The 411: Every major philanthropist in town descended on the Brook Hollow Golf Club recently, where sisters and chairwomen Nancy Perot, Suzanne McGee, Carolyn Rathjen, and Katherine Reeves welcomed them to the 35th annual Sweetheart Ball benefiting cardiology research at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center. This year’s black-tie gala had an art deco theme, and the musical entertainment proved to be quite a treat. Bob Hardwick brought along a torch singer, and together they composed an original song. During the after-party, guests gathered around the piano to sing along with a surprise guest: legend Roger Horchow.

Since its inception, the Sweetheart Ball has raised more than $25 million for cardiology research at UT Southwestern Medical Center. The extraordinary and consistent support has contributed significantly to the recognition of UT Southwestern as a leader in this field.

Who: Candice and Tony Romo, Margot and Ross Perot, Jane and Bud Smith, Annette Simmons and Jerry Fronterhouse, Charlotte and Shy Anderson, Lana and Barry Andrews, Kelli and Jerry Ford, Charlene and Tom Marsh, Peggy and Carl Sewell, Lisa and Kenny Troutt, Heather and Ray Washburne, and LeeAnn and Alan White.

Hundreds of Dallasites rolled the dice on February 7, flocking to The Hall on Dragon for CASAblanca, the ultimate casino-themed fundraiser benefiting Dallas CASA.

Hosted by Dallas CASA Young Professionals and helmed by co-chairs Brooke Farrelly, Hannah Harpole, Vivian Satterfield, and Seth Stukalin, the event was a high-stakes kick-off to the YP spring social season.

Upon arrival, attendees struck a pose before diving into the action-packed gaming tables, where blackjack, craps, poker, and roulette kept the adrenaline flowing.

Those lucky enough to rack up winnings could trade their chips for raffle tickets, vying for dazzling prizes such as a martini kit, a waterproof bluetooth speaker, and tickets to a Dallas Mavericks game.

Meanwhile, the silent auction tempted guests with an enviable lineup of treasures, from indulgent liquor tastings and luxe beauty treatments to fine dining experiences, autographed sports memorabilia, and even a fully tricked out bicycle.

Adding to the evening’s allure was the signature chilled espresso martini — guaranteed to keep spirits high. Guests fueled their fun with a rotating selection of mouthwatering hors d'oeuvres, including honey walnut shrimp, chicken and waffles skewers, and spring rolls with peanut sauce, along with the return of the much-loved vegetable fried rice served in classic Asian-style to-go boxes. For those craving a sweet jackpot, a new-this-year station was frying up hot, fresh donuts that were then drizzled with vanilla icing or rolled in cinnamon and sugar.

As the Special Edition Band turned up the tempo, the dance floor became a whirlwind of moves and grooves, proving that CASAblanca isn’t just about rolling dice — it's also about rolling out a good time.

Among the movers and shakers spotted in the crowd were Dallas CASA president and CEO Kathleen M. LaValle, Crosby and Bradleigh Lipscomb, Lea Caprice, Maddie Sedgass, Wynn Doughtie, Priscilla and Corey Anthony, Jordan Jeffrey, Ben Haase, Doug and Morgan Tornow, Brian and Angie Weatherford, Leo Park, Danielle Ball, Claire Huff, Cody Lo, Shawna Warren, Landon Russell, Caroline Welch, Dustin and Meredith Workman, Gunner Luleff, Kasey Stricklin, Connor Murray, Tara Mulvey, Sinead Ryan, Isabelle Dowling, Mendel and Allison Orendain, Rohan Apte, Anna Payer, Amy Zeringue, Elise and Thomas Terral, Courtney and Daron McFarling, Amanda Hunnicut, Jayne Backstrom, Kendall Spurlin, Jack Miller, Sydney Miele, Brenda Custudio, Hassan Ali, Matthew Brown, Brett Delo, Jim Yardley, Ella Parlor Yardley, Carlos and Tiffanie Mitchell, Sky Williams, Ashley White, Billy Zinser, and Rebecca Lowrey.

As the night drew to a close, guests didn’t walk away empty-handed. A late-night bite of Whataburger Honey Butter Chicken Biscuits wrapped up the perfect ending to an unforgettable evening.

Since its founding in 1979, Dallas CASA has been doubling down on its mission to advocate for children in protective state care who have experienced abuse or neglect. Thanks to events like CASAblanca and the generous support of the community, the nonprofit continues to change lives, one child at a time. Want in on the action?
