Livin’ large

This $45 million lakeside mansion makes a splash as the most expensive home for sale in Texas

John Egan
May 12, 2022 | 9:58 am

A Texas estate fit for Elon Musk (or any other well-to-do folks, for that matter) can now be yours for $45 million.

Aside from its notable size and location, the Austin-area property comes with big-as-Texas bragging rights: It’s currently the priciest home on the market in the state. In 2013, the estate was listed for sale at just $15 million.

Built in 2004 by Austin-based Sendero Homes, the 26-acre estate on Lake Travis, called Villa Del Lago, features a main house encompassing 15,400 square feet. That’s about double the size of a typical Dollar General store.

The house includes six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, four half-bathrooms, and five fireplaces. Nearly every room offers commanding views of Lake Travis.

The roof is topped with clay tiles, Italian-themed copper domes, and skylight features.

“Villa Del Lago is among the finest estates available in Austin and offers incredible waterfront views from the south shore of Lake Travis,” says one of the listing agents, Gary Dolch of Compass. “From the cascading hillside waterfalls to the impeccable 15,400-square-foot home, there’s no other luxury home like it in the area.”

The main suite includes steam showers, two closets, two bathrooms, a Jacuzzi tub, and a walk-out balcony.

“Inside the house, a secret stairwell leads to a safe room enclosed with four concrete walls, a solid metal door, and a hidden dedicated wiring and ventilation system,” the listing says.

Among the other amenities are:

  • Elevator
  • Gourmet chef’s kitchen
  • Custom-made stone staircases
  • Wine cellar
  • Theater
  • Library
  • Bar
  • Gym
  • Half-court for basketball
  • Massage room
  • Five-car garage
  • Fish pond
  • Waterfalls

The estate’s negative-edge swimming pool comes with a bathroom, hot tub, fire pit, built-in grill, smoker, and mini-fridge. There’s also a marina with a deck, and slips for two boats.

A separate pavilion is designed to host weddings and other events. It includes a gated entrance, catering-grade kitchen, valet area, abundant parking, a large fireplace, two-story ceilings, two bars, and two bathrooms.

“The pavilion offers a unique opportunity to host gatherings large or small on property but comfortably away from the main residence. … [It] is exquisitely perched on a gentle sloping hillside with breathtaking views of the lake and evening sunsets,” the listing says.

What: Farrah Fawcett Foundation Tex-Mex Fiesta

Where: The Rustic

The 411: Texas Rodeo met Rodeo Drive when the Farrah Fawcett Foundation moved its annual star-studded fundraiser from Beverly Hills to Dallas on October 20. Hollywood A-listers walked the red carpet, then mingled with Dallas patrons under a starry Texas sky - all to raise money for the fight against cancer.

Co-chairs Alana Stewart and Jaclyn Smith - the late Farrah Fawcett's bestie and Charlie's Angels co-star, respectively - welcomed 350 guests to The Rustic. The crowd dined on Tex-Mex cuisine (Fawcett's favorite), and margaritas flowed throughout the evening.

Actor and famously tanned man George Hamilton emceed the presentations with his signature charm, wit, and flirtatiousness. He brought onstage Dr. Lawrence Piro, Fawcett’s former oncologist and Chief Medical Advisor for the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, who underscored the importance of the evening’s fundraising efforts. Proceeds would go to the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge and Stand Up To Cancer.

Smith presented the “Angel Award” to Dallas star Linda Gray, who declared how much she really does love Dallas off-screen, too. Fawcett's partner Ryan O’Neal was also acknowledged with the Angel Donor Award; O’Neal’s son Patrick O’Neal accepted the award and shared a moving tribute and letter from his father.

A live auction led by Samantha Robinson of Heritage Auctions raised thousands of dollars with one-of-a-kind items like lunch with George Hamilton the following day at the Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek and an LA package including three nights at the glamorous Beverly Hills Hotel and a dinner at Wolfgang Puck’s Spago. An art piece created by Fawcett was one of the biggest "gets" of the night.

For music fans, the highlight of the night was an acoustic set by Grammy-Award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow. From stage, she spoke of her personal battle with breast cancer before playing some of her biggest hits.

At the end of the night, each guest took home a stylish burlap party bag, courtesy of Neiman Marcus, filled with red carpet-worthy swag: full-sized luxury products including Retrouve face serum, Sobel Skin moisture cream, and Knesko Nanogold Repair face masks; plus a signed copy of Linda Gray’s book The Road to Happiness and a bag of Tom’s Perfect 10 Ginger Zing Granola.

The fiesta didn't end when guests departed. Everyone received tortilla chips and Zubi's salsa and queso to-go for the ride home.

Escondo Tex-Mex

Fajitas from Escondido Tex-Mex.

A Dallas restaurateur known for seafood is trying his hand at Tex-Mex: Called Escondido Tex-Mex Patio, it's from Jon Alexis (TJ's Seafood Market, Malibu Poke), and according to a release will open at the intersection of Preston Road and Royal Lane on November 14.

The restaurant is going into the old Ruggeri's space at 5950 Royal Ln. #A, where it will be open daily for lunch and dinner, with brunch on the way.

“We are always focused on providing our diners with high-quality, delicious food along with warm hospitality," Alexis says in a statement. "TJ’s has served Preston Royal and Preston Hollow since 1989. We have long-standing relationships with so many neighbors. We look forward to creating so many new relationships at Escondido and providing a neighborhood destination for any night of the week."

Food

The menu features family-friendly Tex-Mex classics including nachos, tacos, enchiladas, and fajitas. Flour and corn tortillas are from local tortilleria La Norteña.

Menu highlights include

Queso Perfecto with brisket, guacamole, salsa verde, pico

El Trio - guacamole, queso, and cilantro ranch dip

Chicken Flautas - chicken tinga, queso, salsa verde

Elote Fritters - fried corn, lime crema

Tex-Mex Pizza - ground beef, flour tortilla, three cheese blend, ranchero sauce and lime crema

There are enchiladas, salads, combo plates, fajitas, carne asada, chile relleno, and tacos in some intriguing options such as crispy ground beef, brisket, chicken tinga, and spiced salmon, and Huevos Rancheros served all day.

Cocktails include 12 margarita varieties, frozen and on the rocks, in flavors such as blackberry swirl, skinny, mango, and jalapeño cucumber, plus Mexican-inspired cocktails, made with 100 percent blue agave tequila, Mexican beer on draft, and a small assortment of wine.

The restaurant seats 75 inside, with another 75 on the patio, with cozy booths, floral elements, black & white tiles, wrought iron light fixtures, string lights, and an indoor/outdoor bar connected to the patio with Mexican tile.

A dedicated to-go window is directly off Royal Lane.
