Jerry Seinfeld headlines the best events in Dallas this weekend

    Alex Bentley
    Jun 6, 2013 | 6:00 am

It's another eclectic weekend in Dallas, with interesting events in multiple different art forms. Whether you like film, classical music, theater, art, comedy or country music, you're in for a treat.

Below are the best options for your precious free time Thursday through Sunday. Don't like what you see? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.

    Thursday, June 6

    2013 Oak Cliff Film Festival
Much of the local film love goes to the two big film festivals in April, but the Oak Cliff Film Festival is trying to change that. Now in its second year, it's making a splash by opening with a relatively big film, Drinking Buddies, and hosting not one but two screenings involving buzzworthy local director David Lowery. The festival goes through Sunday, with films at Texas Theatre, Bishop Arts Theatre Center and The Kessler.

The 14th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Finals
The prelims for the quadrennial Van Cliburn International Piano Competition have taken place at Bass Performance Hall the past two weekends, and the six finalists, including pianists from the U.S., China, Ukraine, Russia, Italy and Japan, each play two concertos during the finals Thursday through Sunday. The winner is announced Sunday night.

    Friday, June 7

Dallas Summer Musicals presents Sister Act
Making a musical out of forgotten movies is practically becoming an art form in and of itself. Whoopi Goldberg cashed in on this trend by turning her 1992 film, in which a lounge singer is forced to take refuge in a convent after witnessing a murder, into a show-stopping production. Dallas Summer Musicals presents the national tour, which started Tuesday, at Music Hall at Fair Park through June 16.

Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra presents Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
The regular season for the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra may be finished, but the summer vacation series is just heating up. Members of the orchestra join New Orleans group Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, which helped open Klyde Warren Park last October, at Fort Worth Botanic Garden for the kickoff of the FWSO's 2013 Concerts in the Garden series.

    Saturday, June 8

    Art Conspiracy presents Mounted
Local arts group Art Conspiracy, which aims to use art to raise money for nonprofit organizations, holds another of its unique events at Life in Deep Ellum. The theme of this event lets artists go wild with taxidermy creations that may or may not involve actual dead animals. The event also includes food trucks and music from three local bands.

AT&T Performing Arts Center presents Jerry Seinfeld
Thanks to his eponymous 1990s sitcom, there's probably no better known comedian in the world than Jerry Seinfeld. Even though his show has been off the air for 15 years, Seinfeld has remained as popular as ever due to the proliferation of reruns, his web presence and countless stand-up appearances. He shows off his still-strong comedic skills in two shows at Winspear Opera House.

    Sunday, June 9

Dallas Museum of Art presents Cindy Sherman closing weekend
Recent big openings at the Dallas Museum of Art have overshadowed the Cindy Sherman exhibit, which has been at the museum since March. This is your last chance to catch a glimpse of this retrospective of Sherman's groundbreaking photographs, featuring subjects as wide ranging as clowns and sex.

Darius Rucker in concert with Rodney Atkins and Jana Kramer
It's not often that a musician can completely change genres and still be successful, but Darius Rucker has proved the doubters wrong. He's transitioned from his rock days as the frontman of Hootie & the Blowfish to country with hardly a hiccup. Still, he's bound to play one or two Hootie songs at this concert at Verizon Theatre at Grand Prairie.

Jerry Seinfeld plays two shows at Winspear Opera House on June 8.

Dallas is closing down the streets in Deep Ellum, the entertainment-driven neighborhood, this weekend.

According to a release, the Dallas Police Department will block off the streets on March 14 and March 15, Friday and Saturday night, to enhance public safety and manage both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

The plan includes an increased police presence, with officers strategically positioned at key locations to control the flow of traffic.

The closures will be in effect this weekend with future weekend closures to be determined at a later date.

The two major streets that will be blocked are Elm Street and Main Street, between Good Latimer Freeway and Malcolm X Boulevard.

Barricades will be set up at designated intersections of Elm Street and Good Latimer Freeway, as well as Malcolm X and Main Street.

All side streets leading into that area will be blocked as well including Crowdus Street, Pryor Street, and July Alley.

Traffic passing through will be open on Commerce Street on the south side of the neighborhood, and Monument/Indiana Street on the north side.

The street closures will start at 10 pm, but the time is flexible based on safety needs.
