    Jul 1, 2014 | 6:00 am

What does the Fourth of July mean to you? If you are reading this, most likely it means finding a good place to drink beer and eat hot dogs. We have that (well, corn dogs, which are better), along with a couple of other food events to keep you occupied during this holiday week.

    Tuesday, July 1

Chefs’ Choice Charity Featuring Chad Houser at Green Grocer
Green Grocer continues its Chefs’ Choice Charity program this month benefiting Cafe Momentum. From 5-7 pm, Green Grocer features samples of executive director Chad Houser’s braised grass-fed brisket taco with cilantro pesto and chevre, signature pressed juice, as well as bites and sips from several Green Grocer partners. Additionally, Green Grocer has created a juice called “The O.G,” with organic green apples, cucumber, jalapeño and kale. Through July 31, a portion of the proceeds from each sale benefits Cafe Momentum.

Sustainable Wine Dinner at Brio Tuscan Grille in Allen
Head out to Brio Tuscan Grille in Allen for a multicourse meal featuring beef tartare; herb-crusted halibut; stuffed pork loin; blood orange, fennel and avocado salad; and strawberry Napoleon — all paired with sustainable wines. Dinner starts at 6:30 pm and costs $50 a person. Call 214-383-5556 for reservations.

    Thursday, June 3

    Driftwood Anniversary Lobster Boil Bash
Kick off Fourth of July weekend early by joining Driftwood for its two-year anniversary lobster dinner party. The meal includes wine and beer pairings, and seats are $22. Other specials include $5 Kettle One snow cones and $5 Don Julio drinks. For tickets, call 214-942-2530. The party begins at 5 pm.

    Friday, July 4

Sixth Annual Brass Knuckle Corn Dog Beatdown at Libertine Bar
As far as eating contests go, you’re either into them or you’re not. However, most Texans can stand behind anything related to a corn dog. The Libertine opens at 11 am, with a dunk tank and full menu; the actual 15-minute brass knuckle beatdown commences at 7 pm. (There’s also a kids’ contest at 5 pm.) The adult first-place winner receives a brass knuckles trophy and $100 gift certificate; second-place gets a $50 gift certificate; third-place gets $25 in quarters. If there is a tie, there is a tequila shoot-out. You can register right now, and it’s free, but you must do so in person, at the bar.

    Saturday, July 5

Secrets of the Perfect Macaron Class at Sur la Table
These colorful French confections can be tricky to make, but Sur la Table helps you master the techniques from 10 am-1 pm. The instructor shares secrets for incorporating food colors and unique flavors, piping with precision, and even achieving the perfect pied (foot). Students also explore fillings like flavored buttercreams and ganaches. On the menu are lemon macarons with blueberry cream, chocolate macarons with mint fudge filling and raspberry macarons with rose ganache. Tickets are $69 per person.

    Sunday, July 6

Home Brewing Class at Weekend Coffee
Learn how to brew like a barista at Weekend Coffee’s free home brewing class from 3-5 pm, during which experts show you how to use fancy gadgets like a Chemex, V60 Pour-Over and French press. Participants also gain knowledge in farm and processing methods and roasting. Reserve your spot by emailing nicole@ahhweekend.com.

Meet Cafe Momentum's Chad Houser at the Green Grocer on July 1.

Dallas steak frites restaurant will fry your turkey for free

A restaurant on Lower Greenville is ready and willing to fry your turkey for free: Medium Rare, the upscale prix fixe steak frites chain with locations in nine cities including Dallas at 5631 Alta Ave., is expanding its Free Turkey Fry event to its restaurant in Dallas.

The chain has been hosting this event at its original location in Washington DC for 18 years. According to a release, for the first time, this holiday season they will host the turkey fry at other locations.

The Medium Rare Free Turkey Fry event was founded in 2008, by the restaurant’s co-founder Mark Bucher, who is a passionate voice on hunger, food insecurity, and real-world, scalable solutions.

He launched the event as a way to help those who wanted to avoid the hassles and potential dangers of turkey frying. Many who took advantage of the event were recipients of free turkeys but lacked the skill, confidence, or tools to cook them.

The expansion of this year’s Free Turkey Fry into Dallas, as well as into two additional cities (Houston and Boston), reflects both the program’s growth and the increasing need for community support surrounding the growing issue of food insecurity in the current economic and political climate.

“We’ve seen the growing need to expand the Free Turkey Fry event year after year,” Bucher says. “It’s great to provide food to those that are struggling to make ends meet, but we often don’t think about how they are going to cook the food."

As an offshoot of the Free Turkey Fry program, they launched "Feed the Fridge" during the pandemic, placing community refrigerators across DC, and paying local restaurants to fill them with ready-to-eat chef-prepared meals. That program has provided more than one million free meals and injected more than $2 million back into neighborhood restaurants.

Dallas’ Medium Rare Free Turkey Fry will take place on Thanksgiving Day from 11 am-4 pm, and is open to anyone who brings a fully thawed turkey, up to 10 pounds.

The event will operate on a first-come, first-serve basis, but Bucher says they will try to get to everyone. They're expecting to fry hundreds of turkeys in Dallas and encourage people to arrive early; at their DC events, lines begin forming around 8 am.

This year’s national expansion underscores both the scalability of community-driven solutions and Medium Rare’s long-standing mission to fight hunger and food insecurity with creativity, compassion, and action.

"If we can help a family enjoy Thanksgiving safely, and at the same time help another family eat with dignity through Feed the Fridge, then we’re doing what Medium Rare was built to do," Bucher says.
