Need to send a girl a gift? New site ensures you get it right every time
Choosing the right gift can be tricky — especially when the recipient is a girl. You want something appropriate for the occasion. It should be thoughtful but not sappy. Price is often a consideration. And, of course, there is that ever-important wow factor.
Don’t we all want to be known as the person who gives the best gifts?
If you need help securing that title, let VelvetCrate help. The site, which launched in early 2014, offers a rotating selection of carefully curated gift boxes in three categories — Just Because, Love and Celebrate — which you can order online and have sent directly to your friend, mother, daughter, girlfriend or wife.
“We make it easy for you to show someone who may be far away that you care,” says co-founder Allison Loftus, who lives in Dallas. “Whether it’s for a birthday, thinking of you, get well, congratulations or just because, we make it easy for you to make an impression.”
Loftus started this venture with her sister, Amy Sullivan, who lives in Kansas City. Loftus always loved gift shops; she’s the girl who spends oodles of time searching for and beautifully wrapping the perfect presents for friends and family. She dreamed of opening her own shop one day, but she also understood not everyone liked to spend as much time as she did on the quest.
Sullivan is the tech-savvy side of this duo, and because the sisters live apart, an online-based business made the most sense. Sullivan, a startup junkie, was eager to help her sis turn this dream into a reality.
VelvetCrate selections change seasonally. For example, in the Just Because category, the current assortment includes a journal from Rifle Paper Co., granola from Hippie Chow, perfumed shower gel from Lollia and water bottle from bkr. There are a limited number of gift boxes each season; once they’re sold out, the sisters create a new mix.
Gift boxes are priced at $78 each, and shipping is free. You can also choose to “Make Her Year” by sending the lady in your life all four crates during the year. The price tag on that is $278.
The gifts are wrapped in velvet and sent in sturdy, crate-like boxes. Each VelvetCrate includes a card, which can be personalized; if you prefer to fill in the details yourself, you can do that too. Gift boxes arrive in one to three business days, so even a procrastinator can end up a hero.
“We’re like a modern alternative to sending flowers,” Loftus said. “Flowers are great, but our beautiful gifts just can be enjoyed a bit longer.”
