All in for Alzheimer's

Dallas young professionals make fundraising splash with hot Uptown pool party

Stephanie Allmon Merry

What: BvB Dallas Noche de Neon Pool Party

Where: Sisu Uptown Resort

The 411: For the third year in a row, BvB hosted an afternoon summer pool party that lingered into night time at Sisu. This year's theme, "Noche de Neon," was inspired by the colorful movie Coco. The critically acclaimed animated film is about celebrating Dia de los Muertos but also touches on Alzheimer's, as the main character's great grandmother starts to lose her memories.

The Dallas YP group sipped sparkling cocktails courtesy of Mighty Swell, and DJ Jesse Koo kept the summer beats going. About 400 people in attendance helped raise nearly $9,000 at the party.

BvB Dallas is a young professionals organization that hosts a powder-puff football game — this year, on August 11 — for fun, fellowship, and as a way of raising money for Alzheimer’s research and awareness. Founded by sisters whose father was afflicted by Alzheimer’s, BvB is a personal way for young professionals across the country to raise awareness, funds, and support to help tackle Alzheimer's forever.

Who:Kristi Leonard, Holley Caldwell, Stephanie Zorn, Kara Kirkby, Claudia Areyzaga, Cam Smith, Frances Williams, Izabela Grot, Anaid Barrera, Grace Hwang, Jay Jacoby, Madison Beardmore, Lauren Smith, Allie Carter, Tara Gavlak, Jennifer Threlkeld, Brooke Bailey, Seta Kafi, Caroline March, Allison DeLoach, Melissa Woodring, Charles Harris, Kevin Morley, Laura Ruiz, Christopher Francis, and Sara McArthur.

City News Roundup

It's all about people getting promoted in this Dallas city news roundup

Dallas Love Field

There's a new guy running the show.

This roundup of news around Dallas is perfect for those who are more about the who than the what. It's dominated by appointments including a new interim director at Dallas Love Field, and a new honcho at Habitat For Humanity.

Here's a people-centric version of what happened in Dallas this week:

New at Love Field
Patrick Carreno has been appointed Interim Director of Aviation to oversee Dallas Love Field, Dallas Executive Airport, and the Dallas Vertiport. He replaces Director Mark Duebner, who retired after an interminable 27 years.

Carreno most previously served as Assistant Director of Operations and joined the team in December 2021. He has a degree in Aviation Management and a commercial pilot's license, and was previously Vice President for Allegheny County Airport Authority, overseeing Airport Operations, Field Maintenance, and Security Departments at Pittsburgh International Airport.

New at Emergency Services
Dallas County has hired a new Chief of Emergency Services to oversee the county’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management department: Scott T. Forster has more than 20 years of experience, previously filling similar roles in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and Carbon County, Pennsylvania. He was director of training and operations for the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, and served most recently as senior manager in charge of Emergency Preparedness for Hershey Entertainment and Resorts.

New at Habitat for Humanity
Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity has appointed William "Bill" Eubanks III as its new CEO to continue the nonprofit’s work to drive affordable housing across the city. The announcement was made at the organization’s annual Dream Builders Luncheon featuring former Dallas Cowboys Darren Woodsen and Tony Casillas. Eubanks succeeds outgoing CEO Dave Crawford, who announced his retirement in May of this year. As CEO, Eubanks will oversee the organization's 80+ employees, 200+ volunteers, and its Dallas Neighborhood Homes construction and Dallas Neighborhood Alliance mortgage operations, as well as its ReStore locations.

Eubanks joins Habitat with more than 40 years of experience in real estate operations, asset management, and business operations. He has served as COO for KFC and National VP of Pizza Hut, in addition to owning and operating 32 franchises with Yum! Brands. Most recently, he served as President of Eubanks Holdings overseeing commercial property development. He will assume the position of CEO of Dallas Habitat on November 14.

Christmas radio
Too soon? On November 10, Dallas radio station Star 102.1 switched from adult contemporary to full-time holiday music. This is the seventh straight year the station has executed such a switch. They'll play Christmas music around the clock, before switching back to adult contemporary on December 26.

Performer and perfumer

Fabio Luisi creates exclusive new perfume with Dallas Symphony Orchestra

Fabio Luisi's new fragrance, Ogni Nota (ON).

Dallas Symphony music director Fabio Luisi has proven he's a maestro of many talents on the podium. But behind the scenes, he's got another finely tuned forte that may surprise even the most ardent of concert patrons — he's a perfumer.

Luisi has created a new, limited-edition, exclusive perfume for the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, called ON (Ogni Nota), available as of November 10.

According to a release, the fragrance is now being sold in the Dallas Symphony’s store in the lobby of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, priced at $120 for 30ml and $40 for 10ml.

A selection of Luisi's other fragrances in his FL Parfums collection are also available at the DSO store for $140 for a 20ml bottle.

“This perfume is unisex, and it is very clean with citrusy notes,” Luisi says in the release. “I wanted to evoke a feeling of joy and lightness, like a crisp, Sunday morning.”

Luisi has been creating perfumes since 2012 and has become a celebrated perfumer, lauded in such media outlets as The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and CBS Sunday Morning, DSO says. His FLPARFUMS line is sold online and at very select boutiques around the world.

The DSO fragrance, ON, started as a conversation between Luisi and Kim Noltemy, the Ross Perot President & CEO of the Dallas Symphony. According to the release, they discussed ideas for a scent profile and tested a number of combinations to come up with the perfect perfume for the DSO.

“Perfumes are a passion of Fabio’s, and we have talked about his process of creating new scents and finding new combinations for perfumes,” Noltemy says. “I’m delighted that he agreed to create something customized for us.”

For more information, visit the DSO website.

Dallas founder of Chili's to open new Loop 9 BBQ restaurant in Grand Prairie

Loop 9

Got your sausage right here.

A Dallas famous F&B guy is opening another restaurant. Called Loop 9 BBQ, it's a new BBQ concept featuring prime brisket from Larry Lavine, the founder of Chili's, and it's opening in Grand Prairie in early 2023.

According to a release, it'll be one of the first restaurant to go into EpicCentral, the 172-acre entertainment center off Highway 161 that's home to Grand Prairie Public Safety Building, Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark, The Summit recreation center for adults ages 50+, The Epic, Playgrand Adventures, five lakes, a grand lawn, and boardwalk.

Loop 9 BBQ describes itself as a Texas barbecue restaurant serving prime brisket, pork ribs, pulled pork, and Meyer’s Elgin sausage.

The signature appetizer is “Dirty” Burnt-End Queso, while a full bar will offer fresh lime margaritas, house cocktails, craft beers, and wines.

Sides will include Mexican corn, borracha beans, fried okra, cornbread, and two flavors of fries.

Desserts will be based on recipes by Lavine's wife, Ann, including Chocolate Cream Pie, Coconut Cream Pie, Key Lime Pie, and Banana Cream Pudding. The restaurant will have a separate pie shop selling whole pies to take home.

Lavine has featured her pies at previous restaurants, namely two short-lived taverns he opened 15 years ago, Red's Patio Grill in Plano and Strong's Everyday Tavern in Uptown Dallas.

Since opening is still a few months away, Loop 9 is now offering catering services as a prelude; the menu is online.

This isn't Lavine's first foray into BBQ; in 2014, he helped found Ten 50 BBQ in Richardson.

The release says the restaurant is named for a doomed Loop 9 Dallas-Fort Worth route that would have eased traffic from the future DFW airport. How Dallas, to name a restaurant for a freeway! Grand Prairie now has 161, brimming with projects that include the EpicCentral development that comprises amusement parks, hotels, conference center, and restaurants.
