Movie Review

Paul Thomas Anderson crafts unique coming-of-age story with Licorice Pizza

Alex Bentley
Dec 22, 2021 | 11:08 am

Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson has had one of the more eclectic careers in Hollywood, making movies about everything from the 1970s porn industry to an oil baron to a fastidious dress maker. The majority of his films have been set in or around the Los Angeles area, a location to which he returns again with Licorice Pizza.

The ‘70s-set film centers on Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman), a 15-year-old whose self-confidence and ambitions are not commensurate with his age. He meets Alana (Alana Haim), a 25-year-old photographer’s assistant, at the beginning of the film on school picture day, and almost right away he develops a major crush on her.

Gary is an actor/entrepreneur whose agent mom (Mary Elizabeth Ellis) provides only scant supervision. Gary soon convinces Alana to be everything from a chaperone on an acting trip to a coworker in a startup waterbed business, all the while hoping against hope that she will give in to his age-inappropriate romantic desires.

The film, whose name derives from a defunct L.A. record shop chain that is strangely not referenced in the story, is weird yet approachable. Why exactly Gary has his hands in so many different pies and how he has the means to do so is never fully explained, but he’s such an affable and charming character that it’s easy to follow him wherever he wants to go.

Likewise, Alana is someone whose wanderlust takes her in many different directions, including a fling with one of Gary’s co-stars, Lance (Skyler Gisondo) and a stint as a volunteer in the mayoral campaign of Joel Wachs (Benny Safdie). Even when you’re questioning her decisions, she remains someone for whom it’s easy to root.

Even for Anderson, the goal of the film is a bit of a mystery. Gary and Alana’s various adventures seemingly have no point, but they also intersect with some real-life figures, including Wachs (an L.A. city councilman who first ran for mayor in 1973) and Jon Peters (Bradley Cooper), a hairdresser-turned-producer who was in a relationship with Barbara Streisand from 1973 to 1982.

Almost as interesting as the film is the actors Anderson chose to include. The casting of Haim may seem odd until you look at Anderson’s filmography and realize he’s directed no fewer than nine music videos for Haim, the pop rock band featuring Alana and her sisters (who, along with their parents, play Alana’s family in the film).

He also seems to have a thing for Hollywood families, as the film features Hoffman (son of the late Philip Seymour Hoffman), two of Steven Spielberg’s daughters, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s father. That’s not to mention cameos by Maya Rudolph (Anderson’s wife), Sean Penn, Tom Waits, John C. Reilly, and, in an oddly racist role, John Michael Higgins.

Licorice Pizza comes off as more of a lark than most of Anderson’s films, but because he has a unique approach to filmmaking, it’s also more interesting than maybe it has a right to be. It’s a coming-of-age story as only Anderson can tell it, one that fits right in with the rest of his filmography.

Licorice Pizza opens in theaters on December 25.

Best of the Wurst

Some meaty tips for the best jaunt through Wurstfest in New Braunfels

If you can't relax with some sausages, when can you relax?

New Braunfels is a bit of a drive for Dallasites, but fans of German beer and food have a great incentive to go before the event ends on November 13.

Wurstfest is in full swing again in the popular Hill Country town, coming out of its first weekend of 2022 festivities. Admission is free from Monday to Thursday, then $18 online for the weekend.

Although the German food is at least half the draw, Wurstfest could be called Bierfest with the sheer volume of beers it serves. And they’re not expecting too many visitors drinking before business hours end in the rather quaint New Braunfels. So, Wurstfest starts at 5 pm on weekdays, but the five hours it’s open (ending at 10 pm) offer plenty of ways to pass the time.

All weekdays start with live music at 5:30 pm on all five stages across the old German grounds. (For those who haven’t visited, this is basically a theme park: visitors wander through timber framed beer halls, past many, many concession stands, down the Comal River to a fairground, all without stepping out of Germany, it seems.) From those opening sets, there’s near-constant music on three of the stages.

Most of the entertainment comes from live music and the novelty of wandering around among the lederhosen and dirndls. (Those drinking less than friends should strongly consider bringing a book — this is from experience.) But there is some light programming every day to break up the drinking and dancing, especially for visitors with kids.

Wednesday bring smasskrugstemmen (beer holding) contest and a magic show. On Thursday, kids can hear some storytelling, and Friday, Veteran’s Day, honors veterans with a salute. Following crowds will also bring visitors to shopping, sausage-making demonstrations, and children’s fair rides.

Perhaps needless to say, the food is legitimately excellent; this is, at its heart, a culinary event, and serves more than standard fried fair foods. Obviously, sausage is a great choice, but there are potatoes, gravy, pickles, and sauerkraut to go around.

Returning revelers are thrilled to share their best recommendations for the food and imported beers. Pacing yourself, three to five hours is a very reasonable stretch for trying as much as possible and returning to old favorites.

Wurstfest tickets are available now at wurstfest.com, along with more information and entertainment schedules.

Dallas man charged with killing rapper Mo3 sentenced for firearms

Dallas rapper Mo3 was killed on November 11, 2020.

A Dallas man accused of murdering rapper Mo3 was sentenced for possession of a 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

According to a release from U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Chad E. Meacham, Kewon Dontrell White, 23, received 105 months, or nearly nine years, in a federal prison after pleading guilty in May to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

White was sentenced on November 8 by U.S. District Judge Karen Gren Scholer.

White was previously convicted of felony offenses involving unauthorized use of motor vehicles and evading arrest and detention. That offense took place in August 2020, when officers saw White commit a traffic violation on his dirt bike while driving down West Pleasant Run Road in Lancaster.

They tried to pull him over, but he fled the scene. Officers chased him as he crashed his dirt bike and ran on foot, before he was detained a short time later and discovered the pistol in his pants pocket.

White has also been charged by Dallas County with the murder of 28-year-old rapper Melvin Noble, also known as M03, who was gunned down and killed on I-35 on November 11, 2020.

White was arrested for Noble's murder on December 9, 2020, after being identified by a witness. That case remains pending.

Sprouts supermarket in Dallas' Lakewood neighborhood has an opening date

Sprouts Farmers Market

Their produce selection is mighty fine.

In the latest supermarket news, there's an opening date for the newest Sprouts Farmers Market coming to Dallas.

Located in the Lakewood-ish area at the Hillside Village center at 6465 E. Mockingbird Ln. #322, it's opening on November 18. A release says that they'll host a ribbon-cutting on Friday morning at 6:45 am. Oooh, that's a tad early.

But there'll be opening-themed events all weekend. To wit:

  • Friday, the first 250 shoppers will receive a reusable goodie bag filled with product samples from featured brands.
  • Saturday, beginning at 7 am, the first 200 guests will receive a golden envelope filled with coupons.
  • A caramel apple charcuterie demo from Thyme & Date with samplings will be available all weekend.

Throughout the weekend, they'll distribute samples from pioneering brands at the Vendor Village, with kids’ games, a DJ, and more.

From November 18-20, customers who text “DALLAS” to 777-688 will receive 20 percent off their purchase when they scan their account barcode at checkout. Through the app, shoppers can view the Sprouts’ weekly ad and save more than $100 with digital coupons on grocery staples and new items every month.

Headquartered in Phoenix, Sprouts is one of the largest and fastest growing specialty retailers of fresh, natural, and organic food in the U.S., with approximately 380 stores in 23 states.

The new store, which is going into what used to be a Stein Mart, will feature locally produced products, including fruits and vegetables from Chip Berry Produce, South Tex Organics, and True Harvest Farms.

Additionally, through Sprouts’ Food Rescue program, the new store will donate groceries that are no longer fit for sale but remain edible and nutrient rich to the North Texas Food Bank.

The intersection is not without supermarket presence: There's a Tom Thumb directly across Abrams Road. However, the Albertson's that used to be across Mockingbird Lane is no longer there.
