    Someone call 911

The Bachelor gets physical, but the girls roll with the punches

    Jennifer Chininis
    Jan 29, 2013 | 7:42 am

When Leslie breaks down in tears because she doesn’t get the first one-on-one date with Sean, it’s a premonition of things to come. Turns out she does get some alone time with her “future husband,” who treats her like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman — the shopping part, not the hooker part, okay? — but then gives her bejeweled butt the boot at the end of the date when he’s not feeling it.

Oh, did I ruin it for you? Probably not. The good stuff never happens when Sean is alone with his lady du jour. The bachelorette pad is always where it’s at, action-wise. Episode four was no exception. Tension is mounting with Tierra the Terrible and, well, lots of people.

Selma has to climb a really big rock. Did we mention that Leslie got 120 carats of diamonds to wear? At least Selma got to ride on a private jet.

For a minute, we can talk about Selma, who got a date with Sean. In the desert. And she had to climb a really big rock. Did we mention that Leslie got 120 carats of diamonds to wear, to go with her couture gown and shoes? At least Selma got to ride on a private jet.

Selma, who prefers heels to hiking, handled it like a pro and nearly bested Sean at his own game. But she won’t kiss him. Oh no. She was born in Baghdad, and her very conservative family would croak if she sucks face on TV. He will have to wait until she’s the only girl left standing.

No matter. There are plenty of other chicks on this show. But Selma is a hottie. She might be worth the wait!

On the group date, in keeping with the this-show-might-kill-you theme, Sean takes the girls to the roller derby. Tierra is psyched; she’s ready to take someone down! Amanda, equally disliked by the others, says she’s done this before, just to mess with their heads. She hasn’t. Ha!

Poor Sarah is genuinely unhappy, and, admittedly, it does seem pretty nasty to ask a girl with one arm to compete at the roller derby. She can’t balance herself as easily as the others, and getting up after a fall is a much bigger deal. She is understandably scared, frustrated and embarrassed.

    Seriously.

But she’s a good sport. She’s up for it. A pep talk from Sean gives her the confidence she needs to get back out there. Until Amanda goes splat and nearly breaks her jaw. Cue the ambulance! That’s twice now. Did anyone know there would be a physical part to this exam?

Amanda goes splat at the roller derby and nearly breaks her jaw. Cue the ambulance! That’s twice now. Did anyone know there would be a physical part to this exam?

With Amanda off to the hospital, Sean decides it would be better to just do some old-fashioned roller skating. The girls are relieved. They tried their best, to impress the hunky, shirted (for now, anyway) bachelor, but they are ready to trade their skates for stilettos, thank you very much.

Tierra is, not surprisingly, her awesomely irritated self. She doesn’t like the way the girls treat her. She thinks they are backstabby high schoolers. She won’t stand for it. She walks off in a huff. She wants to leave. She goes to find Sean — who’s about to slip into the hot tub with Lindsay, a.k.a. wedding gown.

Sorry, Lindsay! Not hot tub for you. Tierra has to cry and throw a fit and tell Sean that it’s hard being in the house with those mean, gossipy girls.

“I just can’t do it,” she whines. “Living with all these women is hard. It’s torture. It’s seriously torture.”

He finds her adorable and sensitive. He’s been worried about her from the beginning.

“You know what I know?” he asks. “You like me. You want to spend more time with me. I can tell by the way you look at me.”

He runs into the house, still in his swim trunks, to get a rose. Cut to Tierra, who has a smirk on her face. You gotta hand it to her. He digs her brand of cray.

The other girls, however, do not. Poor Lindsay is huddled up with the others, still in her bikini.

“I hate drama,” Tierra says to Sean. “But for some reason girls have a hard time accepting me for who I am.” Yes, that must be it.

We already know what happens with Leslie’s Pretty Woman date, so let’s skip to the rose ceremony, shall we? It only gets interesting when the ladies get their panties in a twist at the house.

Tierra commiserates with Amanda, who picks up what Tierra is laying down. After a fake apology to Robin and Jackie, Tierra puts her focus back on the prize.

“I hate drama,” she says to him. “But for some reason girls have a hard time accepting me for who I am.”

    Yes, that must be it.

“I don’t think that you cause drama,” Sean says. “I think you are your own worst enemy, and you freak yourself out.”

Sean reassures Tierra that the girls can’t sway his opinion of her.

“I see her as being emotional and passionate,” he says. “I know she’s here for the right reasons.”

Sean hands out the rest of the roses — to everyone but Amanda. Wow. Girl gets the boot even though she smashed her face on the rink during roller derby. And she’s the only one leaving the house that night. Sucks to be her.

“Heartbreak is such a difficult emotion,” Amanda says. “I feel stupid.”

Next week, there is a Bachelor double-header, on Monday and Tuesday. Double the drama. Four hours. Dear lord. Who’s up for a Tierrable drinking game?

None of the girls are excited about roller derby, but they want to try, if only to impress their man.

Theater fans will have plenty to choose from across Dallas this weekend, including a theater festival, the national tour of a Tony Award-winning play, and four local productions. Other choices include two concerts, two comedians, and a unique collaboration between two local arts groups.

Below are the best ways to spend your free time this weekend. If you want more options, check out the calendar for an even longer list of the city's best events.

    Thursday, August 7

    SheDFW Theater Festival
SheDFW Arts will present the second annual SheDFW Theater Festival, which is dedicated to amplifying the voices of women, trans, and non-binary playwrights and theater artists from Texas and the central U.S. The festival, taking place through Sunday at the Studio Theatre on the UT Arlington campus, will showcase four new productions, including two musicals and two plays.

The Firehouse Theatre presents Rock of Ages
Set in the late 1980s on Hollywood's iconic Sunset Strip, Rock of Ages tells the story of aspiring rock star Drew and small-town girl Sherri. As they chase their dreams at one of the Strip's last legendary venues, German developers threaten to turn the area into a strip mall. Can they save the Strip with the power of rock 'n' roll? The jukebox musical features hits from Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake, and more. The production runs through August 24 at The Firehouse Theatre in Farmers Branch.

Broadway Dallas presents Life of Pi
After a shipwreck in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, a 16-year-old boy named Pi survives on a lifeboat with four companions - a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, and a Royal Bengal tiger. Told with jaw-dropping visuals, world class puppetry, and exquisite stagecraft, Life of Pi creates a breathtaking journey that will leave audiences filled with awe and joy. The production runs through August 17 at Winspear Opera House.

    Teddy Swims in concert
The journey toward success for singers can sometimes be long and twisting. Many might think that Teddy Swims came out of nowhere with his 2023 No. 1 hit "Lose Control," but that song came after four years of releasing music that for some reason didn't grab the public's attention. He doesn't have that problem now as his second album, I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 2), went to No. 4 on the Billboard 200, and he'll headline this concert at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving.

    Friday, August 8

Theatre Arlington presents I’m Proud of You
Fred Rogers (aka Mr. Rogers) died over 20 years ago, but his legacy has lived on thanks to Fort Worth author Tim Madigan’s 2012 book, I’m Proud of You: My Friendship with Fred Rogers; the 2018 documentary, Won't You Be My Neighbor?; and the 2019 feature film, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Madigan's book was turned into a play which made its world premiere at Circle Theatre in Fort Worth in 2023. The production, running through August 24 at Theatre Arlington, chronicles male friendship at its finest and most powerful.

    Improv Addison presents Bobby Lee
Bobby Lee is a Los Angeles-based comedian, actor, and podcaster. Recent roles include guest spots on Magnum, P.I., Reservation Dogs, and And Just Like That. He co-hosts the podcast Tigerbelly with his best friend, Khalyla, and Bad Friends with Andrew Santino. He'll perform five times through Sunday at Improv Addison.

Richardson Theatre Centre presents Be My Baby
John, an irascible Scotsman, and an uptight English woman, Maude, are brought together when his ward marries her niece. When the young couple decides to adopt a newborn baby, the older couple has to travel 6,000 miles to California to pick up the child. The problem is, John and Maude despise each other. But when they get stranded in San Francisco and have to jointly care for the helpless newborn, they form a new partnership and learn some startling lessons about life and love. The production runs through August 31 at Richardson Theatre Centre.

Theatre Coppell presents The Trip to Bountiful
The Trip to Bountiful is a moving play that tells the story of Carrie Watts, an elderly woman, who longs to escape the cramped Houston apartment where she lives with her protective son, Ludie, and her authoritarian daughter-in-law, Jessie Mae. Carrie wants to return to her beloved hometown of Bountiful, Texas, one final time before she dies. It’s the journey - and performance - of a lifetime. The production runs through August 24 at Coppell Arts Center.

    Hyena's presents Jim Norton
Standup comedian Jim Norton is a two-time New York Times bestselling author and can be heard every morning on The Jim Norton & Sam Roberts Show on SiriusXM Satellite Radio. In addition to appearing on shows like Inside Amy Schumer (Comedy Central), Louie (FX), and Crashing (HBO), Norton has released a number of comedy specials, most recently Unconceivable on YouTube. He'll perform twice on Friday at Hyena's Comedy Nightclub.

    Saturday, August 9

Uptown Players & Bruce Wood Dance present Imagine
The creative forces from Uptown Players and Bruce Wood Dance will join together for the first time to present Imagine, an entertaining and yet poignant new performance celebrating love, identity, and the transformative power of song and dance. Blending the expressive styles of cabaret, contemporary dance, and live music, Imagine offers audiences a moving and multidisciplinary experience that honors the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. The production will be at Kalita Humphreys Theater on Saturday and Sunday.

    Sunday, August 10

    Xdinary Heroes in concert
K-Pop bands are all the rage the past few years, but what about K-Rock? The band Xdinary Heroes is hoping to lead that charge. They formed in 2021, releasing a series of EPs prior to their 2024 debut album, Troubleshooting. Their most recent release is the 2025 EP Beautiful Mind. They'll play at The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Irving.

    Life of Pi
Photo by Matthew Murphy & Evan Zimmerman

The national tour of Life of Pi will be at Winspear Opera House through August 17.
