AT&T Performing Arts Center's 2024-25 Broadway season might cause deja vu

You might experience a sense of deja vu with the AT&T Performing Arts Center's 2024-25 Broadway season, as several titles have come through DFW recently.

Luckily a lot of those musicals are crowd-pleasers, with plenty of movie tie-ins to further refresh your memory. As with previous recent ATTPAC seasons, all will perform at the Winspear Opera House and most of the runs are very, very short.

“This season, we have selected five stories that — in their own ways — speak to the universal challenge of finding acceptance in a confusing world," says ATTPAC president and CEO Warren Tranquada. "While job one of a performance is to entertain through compelling storytelling, we can authentically connect artistry to issues in our own lives."

First up is Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company, with the gender-bending twist recently seen on Broadway courtesy of director Marianne Elliott.

It’s Bobbie’s 35th birthday party, and all her friends keep asking, “Why isn’t she married? Why can’t she find the right man and isn’t it time to settle down and start a family?” As Bobbie searches for answers, she discovers why being single, being married, and being alive in the 21st century could drive a person crazy.

Company features such award-winning songs as "You Could Drive a Person Crazy," "The Ladies Who Lunch," "Side by Side by Side," and the iconic "Being Alive." It runs September 25-29, 2024.

Next is Dear Evan Hansen, the first contemporary musical about connection in the digital age.

Meet Evan Hansen, a high school student who always feels like he’s on the outside looking in. After writing a letter to himself that was never meant to be seen, Evan becomes entangled in a lie that was never meant to be told and a life he never dreamt could be his. As a result, Evan finally gets what so many of us are searching for: the chance to finally fit in.

Packed with some of the most popular musical theatre songs from the last decade including “You Will Be Found,” “Waving Through A Window,” and “For Forever,” Dear Evan Hansen features an uplifting score by the Tony, Grammy, and Oscar-winning team behind The Greatest Showman, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and a book by Tony Award winner Steven Levenson. It runs December 19-21, 2024.

The new year brings Mean Girls, the hilarious hit musical from book writer Tina Fey, composer Jeff Richmond ("Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"), lyricist Nell Benjamin (Legally Blonde,) and original director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon).

Cady Heron may have grown up on an African savanna, but nothing prepared her for the vicious ways of her strange new home: suburban Illinois. Soon, this naïve newbie falls prey to a trio of lionized frenemies led by the charming but ruthless Regina George. But when Cady devises a plan to end Regina's reign, she learns the hard way that you can't cross a Queen Bee without getting stung. It runs April 17-19, 2025.

Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, which played the Music Hall at Fair Park in fall 2022, returns to tell the story of The Temptations’ extraordinary journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Set to the beat of the group’s treasured hits, including "My Girl," "Just My Imagination," "Get Ready," and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone," Ain’t Too Proud tells the unforgettable story of the legendary quintet that Billboard Magazine named the greatest R&B group of all time. It runs May 1-4, 2025.

A comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, The Addams Familyis the magnificently macabre musical featuring everyone’s favorite creepy, kooky characters.

Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family. A man her parents have never met. And if that weren't upsetting enough, she confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother.

Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before: keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's "normal" boyfriend and his parents. It runs June 26-28, 2025.

That concludes the main season, but there are also four add-ons.

This is the sixth year of ATTPAC's partnership with Broadway Dallas, and the co-pros for this season are Come From Away (January 14-19, 2025) and Life of Pi ( August 5-17, 2025).

Another partnership with TITAS/Dance Unbound brings CARMEN.maquia January 24-25, 2025.

Ballet Hispanico’s CARMEN.maquia is a Picasso-inspired contemporary take on Bizet’s beloved classic. The physically charged and sensual choreography fuses contemporary dance, with nods to the Spanish paso doble and flamenco.

A stunning set design by Luis Crespo and minimalist black-and-white costumes by fashion designer David Delfin evoke the paintings of Pablo Picasso. This is the premiere of the ballet's evening-length version.

STOMP is the final production on the list, bringing its percussive approach to supermarket carts, plumbing fixtures, paint cans, and even the kitchen sink. It runs May 31-June 1, 2025.

ATTPAC promises that shows will feature new and improved programming elements, including pre-show Facebook Live viewings, themed digital photo booths and bar drinks, Encore at the Cantina, and more.

Four-show subscription packages range from $116-$632, and five-show subscription packages range from $145 to $790.

Texas Ballet Theater executive director leaving for new gig in Northeast

Vanessa Logan joined Texas Ballet Theater in 2016.

Vanessa Logan, who has served as Texas Ballet Theater executive director since 2016, is leaving TBT for a new role in the Northeast, the company says. Her final day with TBT will be June 30, 2025.

The move will allow Logan to be closer to her family, the organization says. Her new position has not yet been announced.

"While we will greatly miss Vanessa and her leadership at TBT, we support her decision to do what is best for her and her family and wish her well in her new pursuit," says TBT board of governors chair Anne T. Bass in a May 19 release. "Throughout her tenure at TBT, Vanessa has demonstrated the highest level of professionalism. It has been a delight to have worked closely with Vanessa over the last nine years, and I am most grateful for her unstinting efforts that have advanced TBT in so many respects."

Logan joined North Texas' largest ballet company before the 2016-17 season; she previously had worked at the American Repertory Ballet in New Jersey and Boston Ballet.

"Being part of TBT has been an immensely enriching and transformative experience. Partnering with Artistic Director Tim O’Keefe, working alongside such talented artists, and collaborating with a dedicated administrative and school staff has been a true privilege," Logan says in the release. "I am also deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our committed Board Chair and the Board of Governors, whose vision and leadership have been instrumental. Contributing to productions that bring beauty and artistry to our audiences and nurturing ballet education for countless children in Dallas-Fort Worth has been incredibly rewarding."

During her tenure with TBT, Logan helped the company navigate through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 followed by a catastrophic winter storm of 2021; she helped smooth the transition of artistic director from Ben Stevenson to Tim O'Keefe in 2023; and she oversaw new school facilities in Richardson and Dallas. TBT has also begun a 65,000-square-foot renovation of its Fort Worth facility to support future growth.

"Vanessa’s support and partnership during the transition was phenomenal. I cannot imagine another leader better equipped to guide TBT seamlessly through such a transformational change," O’Keefe says. "Her steadfastness instilled confidence and built trust with staff, students and subscribers as she ensured that we held true to TBT’s mission of honoring classical ballet while embracing a new chapter of artistic evolution."

TBT’s Board of Governors will immediately start searching for Logan’s successor and will quickly name an interim executive director to oversee operations until a permanent leader is in place, they say.

Texas Ballet Theater, which is a resident company of both Winspear Opera House in Dallas and Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, just closed its 2024-25 season with O'Keefe's all-new staging of the beloved ballet Giselle.
