Elderly man stabs girlfriend to death in fight over electric wheelchair
Dallas police are investigating the death of a 43-year-old woman who was stabbed in the chest after an alleged argument with her 71-year-old boyfriend over an electronic scooter.
According to a police report, Robert Coleman admitted to stabbing his girlfriend in an act of self defense. Coleman told police that he loaned his Hover Round electronic wheelchair to his girlfriend for a trip to the store. But when the woman "failed to return the Hover Round in a timely manner," things got violent.
The girlfriend allegedly struck Coleman in the back with a wooden cane and "came at him with a knife." Coleman told police he grabbed the knife from his girlfriend and stabbed her as she moved toward him. Police believe that Coleman's account of events checks out, noting he has injuries "consistent with being struck with a cane."
The couple has a history of domestic violence. The girlfriend had previously been charged with "injury to an elderly" and subjected to an emergency protective order preventing her from contacting Coleman.
Police said they will release Coleman and refer the case to a Grand Jury. There are no charges at this time.
