Military Town
Dallas-Fort Worth honored as nation's best for veterans
On Memorial Day, the nation pauses to honor the sacrifices of the men and women of the military. But Dallas does more than just say thanks. According to data-crunching website NerdWallet, Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington provides one of the best areas in the nation for veterans to live.
Using information on veteran opportunities, economics and "peer support," the survey named Dallas the No. 5 city for military retirees easing into civilian life. A low unemployment rate for veterans (6.3 percent) and a high rate of veteran-owned businesses (14 percent) bolstered Dallas' ranking.
Education was another high point, with several universities offering academic course credit for military service. To top it all off, a Naval Air Station is located just a few miles from downtown Fort Worth.
Other large cities making the grade include Virginia Beach (No. 1), Riverside, Calif. (No. 2), San Diego (No. 3) and Las Vegas (No. 4).
