Dallas city officials shut down streets and gird for possible flooding
With Lake Lewisville filled to the brim, the city of Dallas' Office of Emergency Management is activating an emergency response for flooding that's anticipated in parts of Dallas.
Some streets are being closed in the Northwest Highway/I-35 area. And the Dallas Police Department has issued a warning that flooding is expected between Royal and California Crossing, east of Luna Road and west of I-35. Residents of the affected area have been notified via a "reverse" 911 message.
The police department warns that Northwest Highway between Luna and just east of I-35 is very likely going to be affected by high water during Monday morning rush hour.
According to city spokesperson Sana Syed, Lake Lewisville in an "uncontrolled spill."
Lake Lewisville is in uncontrolled spill. @DallasOEM activating EOC this afternoon to prepare for flooding in parts of #Dallas.
— Sana Syed (@dallaspiosana) May 31, 2015Lake Lewisville climbed to its highest point yet late on Saturday May 30, following another wave of rain that swept through the Dallas area on Friday night. Water levels at the lake are at a 537.02-foot elevation, a 100-year flood mark.
On Saturday, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed the lake to boaters due to heavy rains and high water. According to a release from the Corps, "wakes created by boaters could potentially flood homes and damage property adjacent to the elevated shoreline."
According to information from city officials, the flooding is the result of rain in the upper basins of the Trinity over the last several days which have filled the reservoirs upstream of Dallas, exceeding capacity and overflowing area lakes. Water is also flowing over the spillways into the Elm Fork River through Dallas. This is causing water levels in the Elm Fork through Dallas to rise, causing localized flooding.
All entryways into the area west of I-35, north of Northwest Highway and east of Luna Road and south of Royal Lane are affected by the flooding. The street closures include:
