Highland Park police shoot and kill theft suspect near SMU
A man arrested on suspicion of motorcycle theft was shot and killed by Highland Park police officers around 6:30 pm June 4. The officers were responding to a 911 call from a motorist, who said a motorcyclist was following him near the SMU campus.
According to spokesman Lt. Marc Rossini, police engaged in a brief chase with the motorcyclist along the 3000 block of Mockingbird Lane. He was eventually subdued and arrested.
From the backseat of the patrol car, the handcuffed suspect was somehow able to reach a gun in his possession and shot at the officers, who returned fire.
The suspect was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he later died. The two officers were unharmed.
Police are not yet releasing the identity of the suspect, but Rossini said that he had a warrant out for his arrest and a history of fleeing police. The motorcycle he was operating has been confirmed as stolen.
Per policy, Rossini said the Dallas Sheriff's Department would conduct an investigation on the fatal shooting.
