Road closures in East Dallas and near I-45 will affect weekend travel
There are two big road closures coming up in different parts of town — one in East Dallas, the other in southern Dallas — but both are sure to gum up travel in their respective neighborhoods.
Mockingbird/Peavy bridge
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will close northbound and southbound Loop 12, aka Buckner Boulevard, from September 14 at midnight to September 16 at midnight.
They're performing a bridge demolition on the west side of the Mockingbird Lane and Peavy Road bridge. Traffic will be redirected through the exit ramps to bypass the area.
This will be meaningful if you're headed to White Rock Lake, Flagpole Hill, or White Rock Coffee on Northwest Highway, or god forbid, the Dallas Police Department station at 9915 Northwest Hwy.
The bridge demolition is the first step in a project to replace and upgrade the existing Mockingbird/Peavy bridge.
The current bridge is a two-lane bridge with limited shoulders and no sidewalks. The upgraded bridge will still have two lanes, but with wider outer lanes and sidewalks on both sides to accommodate larger vehicles and bicycle traffic.
TxDOT will demolish and reconstruct the westbound side of the bridge first and repeat the process for the eastbound side. The project is anticipated for completion in March 2020.
I-45 and I-20
In conjunction with the direct-connector ramp rehabilitation project at I-45 and I-20, TxDOT is closing various lanes through the demolition and reconstruction of each ramp.
There are bigger longterm closures in this area through October, but these closures are happening this weekend:
September 13-16, overnight starting at 8 am:
- Northbound I-45 to westbound I-20 direct-connector ramp
- Full closure on eastbound I-20 from west of I-45 to east of I-45
- Two right lanes on northbound I-45 from south of I-20 to north of I-20
September 16-17 overnight starting at 8 pm:
- Full closure on westbound I-20 from west of I-45 to east of I-45
- Eastbound I-20 to northbound I-45 direct-connector ramp
September 13 through September 16, daytime starting at 5 am:
- Three left lanes of eastbound I-20 from west of I-45 to east of I-45
So if you're headed to Houston or Corsicana or even the McCommas Bluff Landfill, you'd be wise to note the hours. There'll be more ramp and lane closures coming. Backups are expected, and motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.
