Digging Dallas
Dallas lands on the list of best cities for engineering jobs
Dallas was just named No. 6 on a new list of the 10 best cities for engineering jobs compiled by Austin-based blog Sparefoot. Other Texas cities in the top 10 include No. 2 Houston at No. 2. Austin.
The list was compiled based on several factors, including job availability (based on data from employment website Indeed.com), median salary, median home price, and median annual rent, as well as the percentage share of job listings, salary as percentage of home prices, and rent as a percentage of salary.
Dallas boasts a hefty 7 percent of engineering jobs, with a median salary of $92,000 — the third highest on the list — which looks pretty great against the $150,000 median home price for the area.
Apparently Texas is known for being quite affordable as Houston features the second lowest median home price at $141,400 and Austin features the fourth lowest at $192,000. The median annual salary for engineers in Houston is $102,000 and Austin's is the lowest at $85,000.
According to the list, the institutions that employ the most engineers in the Dallas area are American Airlines, AT&T, Lockheed Martin, Texas Instruments, Verizon, McAfee, and Exxon Mobil.
Atlanta took the No. 1 spot. Chicago, New York, and San Francisco round out the top five.
