Welcome to the 21st century: DART to add mobile ticketing in 2013
Dallas Area Rapid Transit is joining the digital realm. I'd like to take credit for the idea of smartphone tickets — and for the record, I'm totally taking credit for it — but apparently the Danes had the jump on me.
Per a release sent out Monday, DART has a $1.5 million contract with Unwire, a Danish company that has built mobile ticketing systems in Stockholm and Copenhagen. DART will be Unwire's first American client. Digital tickets, which will display on smart phones along with a QR code, will be available for purchase in spring 2013.
"It offers the customer one-stop shopping for transit products, eliminating the need for a rider to search on multiple websites. And the rider can have the correct ticket delivered directly to their phone," DART CFO David Leininger said.
The digital tickets will also be available to riders of the T in Fort Worth and the Denton County Transportation Authority.
