Need for Speed
Summer’s most intense competition races into Fair Park in Dallas
Part rally, part supercross, and 100 percent exhilarating, Red Bull Global Rally Cross races into Dallas’ Fair Park on June 3-4. Wheel-to-wheel racing of up to 10 cars at once, in high-speed heats over a combination of dirt, asphalt, and jumps, make Red Bull GRC one of the most intense events of the summer.
This is no race at the speedway, mind you. The event features an open paddock, where fans and spectators get to walk around, rub elbows with the racers, and see the cars up close. Get lucky and you might even be able to ask mechanics about the modifications that go into the vehicles.
Once the event is underway, cars specially modified to go from zero to 60 in 1.9 seconds and withstand 70-foot jumps — not to mention contact from other cars — take 16 turns on the .808-mile course in one of the most technically challenging layouts to date.
Designed for optimum viewing, the course is among the fastest and most thrilling in the world. Drivers are pedal-to-metal the entire time, sparing their breaks and their tires as they compete for the trophy. There’s very little downtime for fans, who are treated to two rounds of heat races when the weekend’s events kick off.
Drivers then progress through a series of high-speed, heart-pounding races until the top three finishers from each semifinal round compete in the 10-lap main event on June 4. Drivers who don’t make it to the main event battle it out in a four-lap, last-chance qualifier to fill the remaining spots, bringing the final group of competitors to 10.
Two-time series champion Tanner Foust competes against defending Red Bull GRC champion Scott Speed in a race that includes some of the best rallycross drivers in the world. And this is a family-friendly event: Kids 12 and under get in free with the purchase of adult general admission tickets. (That’s one child per ticketed adult.)
There’s even preferred seating general admission that gives you access to a cash bar, dedicated bathrooms, and a nearby shaded area when things start to heat up. So go online and grab your tickets. Then prepare yourself for an event like no other.
