Bands-of-the-moment Silversun Pickups and Fun headline the best events in Dallasthis weekend
In general, festivals, theater productions and other special events overshadow the live music offerings each week in Dallas-Fort Worth. But that's not the case this weekend: The variety of concerts on tap are definitely the highlights.
Below are your best options for your precious free time Thursday through Sunday. Don't like what you see? Lucky for you, we have a much longer list of the city's best events.
Thursday, December 13
Batman Live World Arena Tour
If you've been missing your Batman fix since Christopher Nolan wrapped up his Dark Knight trilogy this past summer, Batman Live is a good solution. American Airlines Center will be full of action, with a slew of actors and acrobats, a massive video wall, and a real live Batmobile. The show plays six times through Sunday.
2012 Spune Christmas Dallas: The Cush, The Eastern Sea, Bethan and Eric Harvey of Spoon
The Loft is one of the underrated music venues in Dallas, as most people usually focus on its downstairs neighbors, Gilley's and Palladium Ballroom. Its relatively small space is perfect for getting up close and personal with local bands like The Cush and Bethan, who are both part of this holiday show from music management company Spune.
Friday, December 14
Silversun Pickups in concert with Fun, Metric, Grouplove, Passion Pit, The Joy Formidable and IAMDYNAMITE
The Edge often gets criticized for the line-ups of its festival-type concerts, but it's hard to argue with the bands they've gathered for this year's How the Edge Stole Christmas. If you're one of the lucky people to snag a ticket to this sold-out event at Verizon Theatre at Grand Prairie, you not only get to listen to bands of the moment like Silversun Pickups and Fun, but you also have an opportunity to get autographs from them pre-show.
Ricki Derek’s A Merry Little Christmas Show
Ricki Derek is a classic-style crooner in the model of Frank Sinatra who's been singing big band standards around Dallas-Fort Worth for years. His annual Christmas show at the Scat Jazz Lounge in Fort Worth has all of that and more, guaranteed to put you in the holiday mood. Dallas fans can save the gas and catch him at the Lakewood Theater on Saturday night.
Saturday, December 15
2012 Holiday Celebration in the Park
In less than two months, Klyde Warren Park has already proven to be a great place for events in the downtown Dallas area, and this is yet another example. This holiday event has a series of concerts featuring everyone from the Arts District Chorale to pop singer Bean, plus visits with Santa and a tree lighting at the end of the afternoon.
2012 Dallas Winter Warmer
Dallas Winter Warmer may actually make you colder, because it's a beer tasting event at Annette Strauss Square. You get to taste a variety of seasonal stouts, porters and barley wines, all to benefit a good cause: the Cancer Support Community of North Texas. Because the event takes place in the middle of the day, recruit one of your friends to get on Santa's good list by being a designated driver.
Sunday, December 16
Although there's little new going on Sunday, there are still plenty of oldies-but-goodies. We recommend using your time to revisit the 2012 Holiday at the Arboretum, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, The Trains at NorthPark or the Chinese Lantern Festival at Fair Park.
