Hurricane Harbor in Arlington to step up the waterworks in 2025

An original waterpark in Arlington is undertaking an expansion: Hurricane Harbor Arlington, which has been doing the water park thing since the '80s, is adding a massive new water play structure with slides and surprise features, set to open in 2025.

The park is also introducing guest amenities including a coastal-themed area with vividly-colored slides and a multi-level interactive play structure. There'll be more activities for children, plus updated dining options, family cabanas, and refurbished restrooms.

Located at 1800 E. Lamar Blvd. in Arlington, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor Arlington is the watery sibling of Six Flags Over Texas, the longtime theme park in Arlington; the two facilities are just across from each other on opposite sides of I-30. Hurricane Harbor originally opened as Wet 'n Wild in 1983, but was bought by Six Flags in 1995.

Hurricane Harbor features more than 40 rides and attractions like Typhoon Twister and Tsunami Surge. But in the competitive world of waterparks, it's never enough, you need more more more.

    The expansion includes:

    • Splash Island: A 58,000-square-foot area with a multi-level water play structure, more than 110 water features, seven kid-friendly water slides, and various water gadgets. A 1,000-gallon Texas-sized tipping water bucket will add to the fun, soaking splash-seekers below.
    • Kids Water Slide Area: Seven additional water slides for smaller riders, including a mini-tornado water slide and a mini wave slide. They have names: Cowabunga, Jellyfish Twist (two slides), RipQurl, Shark Attack, Splashin’ Seal, and Stingray Racer — designed to brings the perfect number of drops and twists for little ones seeking a gentle thrill.
    • Splash Pad: with 24 water features

Other amenities include the option to rent new family cabanas and oversized umbrellas. Junior guest-friendly furniture will also be available, and restrooms in the area will be refurbished.

Enhanced dining options will include the renovation of the in-house restaurant.

In a statement, Six Flags Over Texas and Hurricane Harbor park president Richard Douaihy calls it a "historic expansion" that will represent a new experience, which attendees can enjoy in an unlimited manner if they buy a season pass to both facilities.

"We are transforming the water park with exciting new family attractions and enhanced comfort and dining options, making it the premier destination for family waterpark fun in North Texas," Douaihy says.

Barnes & Noble is opening a new Dallas-area bookstore in Rockwall

Books keep getting hotter and now there's a new place to find them: Barnes & Noble, the thriving bookstore chain, is opening a new location in Rockwall, at 1009 E. I-30, next to Dick's Sporting Goods, in the space previously occupied by Staples.

According to a release, the bookstore will open on Wednesday, August 27.

This location will have it all: more than 20,000 square feet of books, toys, games, magazines, paper, gift items, and a B&N Café.

Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt says in a statement that they are "very pleased to open this beautiful new Barnes & Noble" in Rockwall.

"The enthusiastic response from the community has been encouraging, and our Rockwall booksellers have been hard at work preparing a bookstore curated with their new customers in mind," Daunt says.

The design of the Rockwall store showcases the ambition of Barnes & Noble to create exceptional local bookstores that marry the best traditions of independent bookselling with the resources of the historic chain.

Store manager Brianna Jenkins, who's been with Barnes & Noble for 10 years, says she is looking forward to "creating a welcoming space where readers of all ages can connect, discover great books, and build lasting memories together as a community!”

The store will open at 10 am with local author Lana Ferguson cutting the ribbon and signing copies of her books, including her latest release, Overruled.

Barnes & Noble has more than 660 bookstores across the U.S., as well as its online bookstore at BN.com, the Nook Digital business which offers e-books and an audio book subscriptions service, the SparkNotes educational service, plus stationery and gift retailer Paper Source.

The company is enjoying a period of tremendous growth, thanks to a successful strategy of handing control of each bookstore to its local booksellers. They're experiencing strong sales at existing stores and have opened many new stores after more than 15 years of declining store numbers. In 2024, Barnes & Noble opened more new bookstores in a single year than it had in the whole decade from 2009 to 2019. The bookseller expects to open over 60 new bookstores in 2025.

That includes DFW, where they opened three locations in the area in 2024: a store in Allen, as well as stores in Flower Mound and Richardson.

Rockwall is one of five new Barnes & Noble bookstores set to open in August, alongside stores in Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, and Tennessee.
