    Creel Makes It Work

    Hip Texas designer exudes cool confidence on Project Runway

    When Lindsey Creel, owner of Austin-based brand M.E. Shirley, received a Facebook message from a casting director about competing on Lifetime hit show Project Runway, being a reality TV star was the last thing on her mind.

    “I had always watched the show, but I never planned on actually being on it,” Creel says. “So when I was asked to participate, I kind of just went for it. It was a sudden whim decision that led me here.”

    The 28-year-old Austinite, a participant in last year’s Fashion X Dallas, set off for New York City and began familiarizing herself with the idea that she would be on television for the entire world to watch. The designer admits to being a relatively reserved person, and displaying her life on television has been a strange transition.

    “Watching myself on TV is slightly terrifying but kind of cool,” Creel says. “We’re basically being filmed at work, and watching how stressed you were during a challenge can be really odd.

    “This whole show is like one big surprise party, and I am not good at surprises. But it’s been beneficial to grow in that way and accept newness and just lean into it.”

    Creel set aside her discomfort for the advancement of her business, which she intends to grow through the show’s exposure. Inspired by and named for her great grandmother, M.E. Shirley is a small-batch, handmade apparel line that focuses on quality womenswear pieces.

    Much like Creel herself, the clothes are hip, effortlessly chic, and classic. She says the line is the driving force behind her desire to compete and win.

    “When you have a small business, it’s a part of you. It’s a big part of your life,” she says. “My brand is so personal that it deserves as much attention as it can get. This is essentially a $10 million PR campaign. How many small businesses get an opportunity like that?”

    On the show, her demeanor reflects her off-camera personality — modest, cool, and matter-of-fact. It’s that same modesty and devotion to her work that sets Creel apart from the rest. She says she avoids presenting her personal life and tries to showcase her skill every chance she gets.

    “I hope that people focus on my work. Like anyone who’s in love with their work, it’s not about you. It’s about what you’re doing and what you’re creating. I am who I am and I make the things I like to make and hopefully people will like what I make too.”

    Working with 15 other contestants in a high-stress and fast-paced environment has given Creel a chance to open up. She credits her cast mates for her recent lessons learned and the encouragement to be her authentic self.

    “I am always myself,” says the designer. “It’s a character trait that I enjoy in myself, even though some other people might not. Being out in the open on this show definitely makes me feel vulnerable, but it’s amazing to be a part of it all.

    “It’s awesome to be around this many designers, and we all feed off of each other’s energy in this beautiful way.”

    Creel has high hopes for herself and M.E. Shirley, and she believes her experience on Project Runway will help make her future goals a reality. The designer has tackled each challenge with focus and hard work and has proven to be a force for all other contestants to reckon with.

    “To me, the No. 1 reason to go on the show was to grow my business,” Creel says. “I don’t believe in being poor and famous. Everything is personal to me, and going on TV was never on my list of things to do in life, but I think it’s worth it.”

    In true cool-girl fashion, Creel keeps it simple when asked what she would do next if she won. “I would get some sleep, smile, and be incredibly and wholeheartedly proud of myself. And if I don’t win, I don’t win.

    “But of course winning is the goal. There’s no way around that.”

    Neiman Marcus flagship store in downtown Dallas to close for good

    The iconic downtown Dallas location of luxury department store Neiman Marcus, at 1618 Main St., will close for good, the company says.

    In a statement, parent company Saks Global said it planned to close the store on September 30, 2026 and focus on its NorthPark Center location in Dallas.

    "As we continue to take steps to secure a strong future for Neiman Marcus, our optimized store footprint is aimed at aligning our go-forward presence with customer demand and preferences. After a thorough evaluation, we have made the difficult decision to close the Neiman Marcus Downtown Dallas store on September 30, 2026, and concentrate our resources where our customers prefer to shop.

    "Dallas remains an incredibly important market for the Neiman Marcus brand, and our customers in the city and across the suburbs consistently choose to shop at our NorthPark location. We are committed to serving our loyal Dallas customers at NorthPark, where we plan to infuse elements celebrating the Downtown store’s rich history," the statement read.

    The store has been open since 1914 and served as a bedrock for downtown Dallas.

    The definitive closure announcement, first reported by The Dallas Morning News, ends a months-long saga of will-they-won't-they and back-and-forth with the city of Dallas. There have been many efforts to keep the longtime store open.

    To recap: In mid-February 2025, Saks Global said they were closing the 100-year-old store after a dispute with the landlord. City leaders rallied to keep it open. It worked, sort of: a landlord who owned a piece of land on which the iconic store resides agreed to donate it to the city of Dallas, so that there would be no obstacles for the store's continued operation.

    But then in late February 2025, Saks Global reiterated that the Neiman Marcus Downtown Dallas store would definitely close on March 31, 2025. More rallying happened.

    In late March 2025, days before it was to have closed, Saks Global announced the store would remain open through the 2025 holiday season while it explored a reimagination of the location in collaboration with the City of Dallas.

    In January 2026, Saks Global filed for bankruptcy, leaving the fate of all stores unclear. The more than $2 billion in debt that Saks Global amassed to acquire Neiman Marcus in 2024 helped push the company into bankruptcy court, they said. As part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, Saks Global has secured about $1.75 billion in financing to keep the company afloat and its stores open.

    In announcing the bankruptcy, Saks Global said it was evaluating its store lineup “to invest resources where it has the greatest long-term potential. This approach reflects an effort to focus the business in areas where [our] luxury retail brands are best positioned for sustainable growth.”

    Saks Global announced that the Neiman Marcus store at The Shops at Willow Bend in Plano would close in January 2027 after 25 years. According to Saks Global, there are no plans to replace or relocate the store.

    The closures of Downtown and Willow Bend leave Neiman Marcus with two DFW-area locations: NorthPark Center, and the Shops at Clearfork in Fort Worth.
