A powerhouse Dallas hospital and a Houston healthcare center have achieved joint status as the state’s best hospitals this year.

In U.S. News & World Report’s prestigious 2023 ranking of Texas hospitals, UT Southwestern Medical Center and Houston Methodist Hospital share the No. 1 spot.

Last year, Houston Methodist was the lone holder of first-place honors in Texas; UT Southwestern was rated No. 2.

"UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX is on the Best Hospitals Honor Roll," the 2023 report declares. "It is nationally ranked in 11 adult specialties and rated high performing in one adult specialty and 19 procedures and conditions."

The Dallas institution also scored especially well nationally in several categories: obstetrics & gynecology (No. 43), ear, nose & throat (No. 26), geriatrics (No. 20), urology (No. 25), cardiology and heart surgery (No. 20), diabetes and endocrinology (No. 17), neurology and neurosurgery (No. 18), pulmonology and lung surgery (No. 16), rehabilitation (No. 15), and cancer (No. 19).

"As an academic medical center, we are committed to finding answers, changing lives, and delivering the highest standard of care to our patients," UT Southwestern posted on social media about its new rankings.

Just down the list is Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, which ranked No. 5 in Texas. Three Baylor departments ranked nationally: gastroenterology and GI surgery (No. 33), neurology and neurosurgery (No. 38), and pulmonology and lung surgery (No. 33).

The only other DFW hospital to make the top 10 is Baylor Scott and White All Saints Medical Center-Fort Worth, which lands at No. 8 in Texas.

Dallas' Parkland Health and Methodist Dallas Medical Center tie for No. 12 best in Texas. Medical City Dallas and Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas tie for No. 15. Rounding out the top 20 is Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.

Rankings for the annual U.S. News study are based on scores in patient care, patient safety, outcomes, nursing, advanced technology, and reputation; 592 hospitals in Texas were evaluated this year.

Overall, Houston hospitals dominated this year’s Texas top 10:

    • Houston Methodist, No. 1
    • Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, No. 3
    • Memorial Hermann Hospital, No. 4
    • Memorial Hermann Greater Heights Hospital, No. 6
    • Houston Medical Sugar Land Hospital, No. 9
    • Memorial Hermann Memorial Medical Center, No. 10

American Airlines inks record-breaking deal with Google for cleaner jet fuel

Fort Worth-based American Airlines has sealed a record-breaking deal with tech giant Google to bolster the use of cleaner jet fuel.

The deal involves Google’s purchase of sustainable aviation fuel certificates tied to fuel that American will use at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, one of the airline’s hubs. These certificates enable companies like Google to pay for the environmental benefits of sustainable jet fuel without actually using the fuel.

American and Google say this is the largest publicly announced certificate deal between an airline and a corporate customer.

Google says environmental gains from the certificates will help it cut emissions from employees’ business travel.

The agreement covers 35 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel over three years, resulting in a nearly 300,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions. American has agreed to buy the fuel from San Antonio-based Valero.

“Our industry-leading agreement with Google is a critical step forward in reducing emissions from our operations,” Jill Blickstein, American’s chief sustainability officer, said in a news release. “By working with leaders like Google who share our commitment to innovation, we’re helping to grow demand for [cleaner jet fuel] and support the development of a stronger, more resilient market.”

Sustainable aviation fuel can reduce emissions by up to 80 percent compared with traditional jet fuel. It is made from feedstocks, like waste oil and fats, or it can be produced synthetically using captured carbon dioxide and renewable electricity.

The aviation industry accounts for about 2.5 percent of carbon dioxide emissions around the world, according to the International Energy Agency.
