Off the grid & off the chain

North Texas estate with solar farm, driving range & hangar lands on market for $14.25m

    Amber Heckler
    Jun 20, 2023 | 10:47 am

A secluded, 25.3-acre estate about an hour northwest of Dallas is a self-sufficient mini-city with nearly anything anyone could possibly need. It is now on the market for $14.25 million and is one of the 10 most expensive listings in Texas.

The sprawling property is nestled into a gorgeous natural setting, including 45,000 acres of Caddo-LBJ Grasslands. Technically it's in Decatur - at 2721 Old Decatur Rd. - but the closest neighbors are 20 acres away, according to the listing from Coldwell Banker's Melody Taylor.

Future owners can live off the grid on this compound; it’s equipped with a fully-paid 200-panel solar farm, a private well and septic system, and a 1,700-gallon propane tank. The solar farm generates twice as much energy as the estate will use, the listing says, and an arrangement is already in place to sell back any unused power. All that's missing is a personal grocery store.

If flying is the preferred method of transportation for the next date night or travel excursion, the property comes with its own helipad and a hangar that can fit two helicopters. The hangar is also suitable for any RVs or boats on the premises. But not to worry, the garage can perfectly store four cars in the case of an owner's absence.

The impressive mansion on the estate, dubbed "La Casa de Fe" (House of Faith), takes up 9,600-square-feet on two floors. It was built in 2017 complete with the elegant Spanish-style finishes to match. Want to buy it fully furnished? That's an option.

The home itself boasts five bedrooms, eight-and-a-half bathrooms, a movie theater, a terrace with a fireplace, a wine bar, a gourmet kitchen with not one, but six ovens (no one will be fighting over oven space for Thanksgiving in this kitchen!), and much more.

The master suite of the mansion features a gigantic walk-in closet room – a fashionista's paradise – with a $100,000 floor-to-ceiling cabinet system and a custom-designed island with 30 drawers.

The compound has plenty of space for gatherings, including a chef-inspired outdoor kitchen with a big-enough grilling space "to cook 40 steaks at a time,” multiple entertaining areas, a built-in outdoor fire pit, picnic area, and two pools with an accompanying 3,200 square foot pool house.

Speaking of, the pool house has its own gaming area, pool table, kitchen, three bedrooms, and walk-in closets. As if the resort-style, fully-equipped Parisian guest villa, dubbed “A Walk in Paris,” wasn’t already enough.

    But wait, there's more.

For the sporty folks who might be interested in this not-so-humble abode, there are dedicated tennis, pickleball, and basketball courts, a fitness center, and a driving range.

The fitness center also has its own kitchen, half bath, and laundry facility - because, why not? Inquiring minds truly want to know, can this place get its own H-E-B?

The owners parting with this unbelievable estate are builders Bradina and Michael Benson, who reportedly spent millions renovating the property. More information can be found on coldwellbankerluxury.com, and there's a video tour here.

6 Dallas suburbs make top 10 list of best Texas cities to move to

Allen is the No. 1 best place to move to in Texas, ConsumerAffairs revealed.

Several Dallas neighbors have been deemed the best Texas cities to move to in a new report.

Advisors at ConsumerAffairs, a customer review and news platform, ranked the 50 most populated Texas cities across five main categories – affordability, safety, economy, health care and education, and quality of life – to determine which were the best places to move to. Each city was given a score out of 100 possible points.

Four of the top five best places to move to in Texas are located in Dallas-Fort Worth: Allen (No .1), Frisco (No. 2), Plano (No. 3), and McKinney (No. 4). Two more DFW suburbs, Mansfield (No. 6) and Richardson (No. 10), rounded out the top 10.

The findings revealed that the Metroplex dominated the list due to each area's prosperous economy, safety, and high quality of life.

Allen topped the list as the second-safest city in Texas, and it has the 6th best quality of life in the state. ConsumerAffairs referenced Allen's low crime rates and its easy accessibility to green spaces as additional popular factors.

"With an award-winning Parks and Recreation department and a jam-packed community calendar, Allen is a bustling suburb that holds its own in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area," the report's author said. "Among the 50 largest cities in Texas, Allen has the highest percentage of people living within a 10-minute walk of a green space, at 87 percent."

In ConsumerAffairs separate ranking of the best places to live in the South, Allen ranked third on the list.

Frisco was ranked as the second best Texas city to move to partly for its "thriving sports culture," its "seventh strongest" economy statewide, and its high-ranking healthcare and education systems. Frisco has the highest high school completion rate in Texas, at 97.7 percent.

Meanwhile, Plano landed in third place as "an ideal suburb for movers looking for green space, safe streets and fun activities."

"For residents who like their adventures on the dinner table, Plano is also home to one of the largest food halls in the United States, where diners can sample duck fried chicken, authentic Mexico City tacos and wine all under one roof," the report said.

Elsewhere in the Metroplex, Dallas proper ranked far down the list as the 46th best place to move to in Texas. Fort Worth appeared slightly higher on the list as the 39th best Texas city to move to.

Eight more Dallas-Fort Worth cities were included on ConsumerAffairs' list:

    • No. 12 – Carrollton
    • No. 13 – Lewisville
    • No. 21 – Irving
    • No. 24 – Grand Prairie
    • No. 29 – Denton
    • No. 35 – Garland
    • No. 37 – Arlington
    • No. 45 – Mesquite
