Upscale Dallas taqueria chain shutters 2 locations including Irving

No more tacos in Las Colinas today.

An upscale taqueria in Las Colinas has closed: Taco Diner, which had been open at 5904 MacArthur Blvd. at John Carpenter Freeway for more than two decades, closed the location on January 1, with a post on its website and Facebook page, announcing the sad closure.

"Thank you for dining with us at Taco Diner over the last 21 years," the post says. "We have made the very difficult decision to close our Las Colinas location and want to thank our loyal guests in the Irving community for embracing our style of Mexico City street food."

"We have taken steps to ease the closure by finding opportunities for all managers and team members at neighboring restaurants within the M Crowd family and look forward to continued service and great memories in the years to come," the post says.

This was the chain's only remaining location in Irving. The chain simultaneously closed its location in Sundance Square, with a similar message to its Fort Worth audience.

That leaves just two locations, both in Dallas: West Village and Lake Highlands.

It's a big decline from what was once a thriving chain with locations in Addison, Dallas' Preston Center, Southlake, Fort Worth's Waterside, Plano's Shops at Legacy, Richardson's Cityline complex, and beyond.

Taco Diner, which describes itself as a "celebration of the authentic taco stands of Mexico City and the classic American neighborhood diner," was created in 1999 by restaurateur Mico Rodriguez as a casual younger sibling to the Mi Cocina chain, which he also co-founded.

When it debuted in Dallas' West Village, it was a fresh and lively concept that drew big crowds for its craft margaritas and soft tacos - far ahead of the ensuing glorification of tacos that exists today, and a glorification that also probably helped set the stage for its decline.

In its latter years, it broadened its menu to include crowd-pleasing items like burgers and Mi Cocina's signature margarita, the Mambo Taxi.

Its fortunes were not helped by Mico's departure from parent company M Crowd.

The chain closed down entirely in March after the onset of COVID-19, and the most recent three closures — Plano, Richardson, and Waterside — have all closed since the virus hit.

    New on Knox

Dallas' Knox Street lands all-day restaurant with coveted Katy Trail patio

A new all-day restaurant and patio is joining the vibrant Knox Street culinary scene: Called The Main House, it will take over the former Mashburn space at 3333 Knox St., Ste 145, at the corner of the Katy Trail.

According to a release, it is slated to open in 2027.

The Main House comes from Western Addition Restaurant Group, the company behind Preston Center Plaza hot spot il Bracco (nominated for 2026 Tastemaker Award for Neighborhood Restaurant of the Year) and Bobbie's Airway Grill at Preston-Royal. Owners Robert Quick and Matt Gottlieb bring years of culinary experience from their time at Hillstone Restaurant Group (Hillstone, R+D Kitchen, Houston’s).

The Main House joins a wave of highly anticipated openings on Knox Street, including Théa Mediterranean Rooftop and Sant Ambroeus.

Its location will be the first big draw: The restaurant will feature a patio opening directly onto the Katy Trail, beckoning walkers, cyclists, and diners looking for an outdoor seat.

Its hours will be the second big draw: The all-day Main House will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner - the first Western Addition spot to offer breakfast.

    The menu will include:

    • Entrée salads
    • Sandwiches on house-made bread
    • In-house butchered proteins
    • Shareable dishes
    • Breakfast specialties

The restaurant's design was inspired by classic family retreats such as beach houses, lake houses, and ranches, the release says. Interiors by Dallas-based MMaison Interiors will feature large windows and natural materials intended to seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor dining.

“The Main House is about creating a place people can return to again and again, a true gathering place,” said Robert Quick, founder, CEO, and chief culinary officer of Western Addition, in a statement. “More than ever, restaurants are spaces where people come together. At its best, hospitality invites us to slow down, share a table and engage in meaningful conversation and connection. There is a natural conviviality in these beloved family homes, a sense of belonging, and that is what the Main House is built around.”

Additional details, including an opening date and full menu, will be announced closer to the restaurant's 2027 debut, owners say.
