Bacon backlash: Is it inevitable or just a pipe dream? Meanwhile, today is the last day to cast your vote for two Dallas chefs and add your click to a national magazine hungry for some traffic. Read on for some newsy nuggets on the Dallas-Fort Worth restaurant scene.
ON THE MENU
It didn't take long for the Cafe Lago space in East Dallas to get snapped up. It will becomeUrban Vines Wine Bistro, opened by attorney Jennifer Rodriguez. She plans to sub-lease the kitchen to two women who have been running a catering business and will open for business in May.
The concession stands at American Airlines Center have new Texas-inspired items for the 2013 season, courtesy of executive chef Mark Mabry. Those include grilled kebobs with Thai chili and spicy BBQ sauces, in your choice of chicken, grilled beef or Italian sausage, and Shiner Bock smoked chicken served with loaded mashed potatoes.
Smashburger has teamed with Deep Ellum Brewing Co. on a new set of menu pairings. The menu debuts March 20 and will pair eight Smashburger items, including several new sandwiches, with five Deep Ellum brews.
Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf debuts a new beverage called a tea cappuccino, which incorporates the familiar style of an espresso cappuccino but in three flavors: Chai, Scottish breakfast and anniversary blend, with vanilla bean sauce and steamed milk, served in a cappuccino cup.
Fro-yo has faded, but Greek-yo has not. Thus, this new product from Pinkberry: a Greek yogurt called Pinkberrygreek that is not frozen. A non-frozen yogurt at a fro-yo place? Bo figure. Customers can get this Greek yogurt with toppings or blended in a smoothie.
Denny's returns again to bacon. It did well a couple of years ago, with a novelty maple-bacon sundae that got a lot of attention. Baconalia! is its limited-time menu of bacon items that includes the maple-bacon sundae, a salted caramel brownie sundae with bacon, a maple bacon milkshake, bacon mac and cheese bites, caramel bacon-stuffed French toast, and the ultimate BLT. Bacon backlash. It's only a matter of time.
CHEF DOINGS
Daniel Tarasevich is the new executive chef at the Second Floor Bistro – Bar at Westin Galleria Dallas. According to a release, Tarasevich has more than 10 years of experience, most recently at Tillman's Roadhouse in Fort Worth, and previously at House of Blues, Sushi Samba and Charlie Palmer.
Chefs Matt McCallister of FT33 and Omar Flores of Driftwood have been selected among 100 finalists for Food & Wine's People’s Best New Chef award. The 100 nominees include 10 chefs in 10 regions across America; McCallister and Flores are contenders in the Southwest. The chef with the most votes in each region will be named a finalist, and the finalist with the most votes overall will be named the People’s Best New Chef.
The last day to vote is March 18. Finalists and winner will be revealed March 19.
