New high-tech container garden to crop up at Dallas skate park
A Dallas restaurateur has spearheaded an innovative new farming concept: Called DiveDWN, it's a collaboration between Franchesca Nor, owner of Dive Coastal Cuisine in Snider Plaza, and 4DWN, the Dallas skate park dedicated to service and community.
According to a release, the new enterprise will use cutting-edge Growtainer technology to create a high-tech container garden, called Future Farm, located at the skate park at 2633 Ferris St.
It will comprise two climate-controlled 40-foot-long containers that can grow up to 36,000 heads of lettuce annually, as well as other crops such as tomatoes during warmer weather. A deck will surround these containers featuring planters growing outdoor crops and a viewing deck for the skate park.
"At Dive, our belief has always been that sustainability is the key to improving not just the restaurant but also the neighborhood, community, and planet," Nor says. "Our core values of responsibility, education, transparency, and community have guided our journey thus far. Now, with the 4DWN partnership, these values are taking on a new dimension.”
The container garden will serve a dual purpose:
First, it will enable Dive to source fresh produce for the restaurant, ensuring that customers know where their food comes from.
Second, the Future Farm will serve as a hub for education, cultivation, and conservation. They'll make donations to needy families, host classes, and do a composting program on the side.
DiveDWN is set to open on Saturday, May 11, kicking things off with a free community event called FutureFest from 12-5 pm, with an artisan market, food from Dive Coastal Cuisine and other partners, DJs, skaters, and Mother’s Day-themed activities like making your own flower bouquet.
